Jersey Blockade - RDJ - 05-05-2021

There’s increasing Anglo-Franco tensions emerging tonight with the French purported to be currently blockading the ports of Jersey in retaliation with the dispute with France on fishing rights in British waters since Brexit. Navy vessels are being called in on the island as a precaution.

There’s also increasing threats of France completely cutting off their supply of Jersey’s electricity which 95% of it is supplied by underwater cables from France.

Which then begs the question, if France did go ahead with their threats on the electricity supply of the island - how will this then affect broadcasting on the Channel Islands as a whole? Especially given such a big news story could be on the horizon for the islands and the difficulties this would then cause to relay the latest news to islanders.

If there were power supply issues on Jersey itself, would there be contingency plans in place by ITV & BBC to provide a regional news service potentially broadcast from the UK to the islands for the likes of Guernsey and the other islands who are unaffected by this and for the few in Jersey that may have electricity generated to be able to watch television. Much like the service Points West provided to Spotlight viewers a few years back when they decamped to Bristol for a few days when the Plymouth studios lost their electricity supply.

I daresay there would be some kind of backup and maybe many channel islanders would have battery powered radios. But if the BBC and ITV were knocked out by a power cut as a result of France's actions then there would be huge political implications. I can't see it happening

I would suspect that if there are issues with the power supply on Jersey then any contingency regional news programming will come from ITV West Country and BBC Spotlight respectively...unless either network was able to get something on either from Guersney, or one of the other islands

If power was lost to Jersey, then it would also leave BBC Radio Jersey as a casualty in all this, with them presumably going to simulcasting BBC Radio Guernsey.

Also, if matters escalated further am I right to assume that the main transmitters for the CIs that gets the signal from the UK mainland is on the island of Alderney, so if they had power issues that affected the transmitters, then the islands would be completely cut off?

Although as Guernsey electricity comes via Jersey despite contingency arrangements their power would be underthreat too.

Can't even believe this is a conversation we're having to have though.

I didn't realise. So potentially, if Jersey lost power it could take Guernsey with it into a blackout?

Sadly we are.

Well about electricity this tweet came out to reassure the Islanders' fears https://twitter.com/electricjersey/status/1389883697663516674
But I completely agree with Brekkie here, it is indeed unbelievable that we are discussing all of this, right now this is the closest that the UK and France went to war with one another since the Napoleonic Wars more than 200 years ago

I think people are getting a bit carried away with the suggestion of a war between France and the UK, that's BM11 fantasy territory,

Thank goodness for that, I was really scared, BTW what is BM11?

Which we were all glad about.

I'm sorry for my behaviour guys.......I can be pretty anxious sometimes, and this has been one of these cases where the anxiety got the better of me, I am so sorry for going off topic, I am very sorry....Humprey Hacker mentioned a backup plan earlier and Jersey Electricity said that they can fulfill Jersey's electricity requirements on their own if needed, so maybe everything will be alright....

Yes, he had this crazy idea last year that all events last summer would be cancelled due to a global pandemic.

Bringing it back to TV and I'm guessing it's proximity means French channels can be picked up quite easily in the islands.
