Epic Gameshow - Steddenm - 17-04-2021

- The Price is Right
- Strike It Lucky
- Bullseye
- Play Your Cards Right
- Take Your Pick
- Name That Tune

As the title, if ITV were to bring one of the gameshows back as a full series, which one would you like to see return and why?

For me it will be Strike It Lucky as I think it has more entertainment value and wouldn't require an audience whereas the others would.

(MODS: Tried to add this as a poll but the poll function doesn't work)

Epic Gameshow - iloveTV1 - 17-04-2021

I don’t think any of them work in the current format of hour long episodes. They’re good for one or two episodes a year but I don’t think any would work as a full series, especially as an hour and with Alan as host.

Epic Gameshow - Lewser - 18-04-2021

Don't think you'll beat Michael Barrymore in his prime.

Him and the often shy or quirky contestants made the show.

Alan Carr and contestants which will probably be more up to speed on being on TV and probably more confident on camera could possibly take the fun away from it now.

I can't see Strike It Lucky being brought back because of the show's link's with Barrymore (*)

* I know he is no longer a suspect but Its my belief that ITV wouldn't risk bringing the show back

If I recall correctly The Price Is Right was either an hour long or nearly an hour long when it was presented by Leslie Crowther..

They wouldn’t have had it in Epic Gameshow if ITV didn’t want it back because of that.

If they were to bring Strike It Lucky back, I’d make it 30 minutes as it was when it was first on rather than the bloated one hour format.

You wouldn't be able to make it thirty minute because you don't work for either ITV or Fremantle. Wink

I think I’m as over these classic gameshow revivals as I was BBC2 bringing back old idents.

Polls don't work, because only I can start a poll. Polls were removed from TVF a long time ago, and I have no plans to re-introduce that facility.

The investigation is still on-going, and as such there will be no discussion of that please.

Epic Gameshow - Brekkie - 18-04-2021

I think Strike it Lucky was one of the stronger ones as despite the association with Barrymore it had been over two decades since it had aired and wasn't as strongly associated as the Brucie formats are, where you're always a poor immitation really. Along with Take Your Pick I think those were the two formats Alan could put his own stamp on, especially the latter which suits his "chatty man" persona.

It's Name That Tune this week which again I think may benefit from being somewhat unfamiliar to much of the audience.

As much as I'd love to see ITV bringing Bully back (along with the speedboats, trouser presses and novelty telephones), I just know for some mad reason they'd stretch it out to an hour (why?!). I didn't bother watching this week's EG - I wasn't a fan of the Bullseye episode last week (also I don't really care for the Price is Right). For me, it wasn't quite the torture device they turned Family Fortunes into but still didn't think much of it. If any of them come back they should put them in a half hour format, or sell ITV two half hour shows so they'll still fill the hour.

The thing is, we know ITV can do it - example: Millionaire. It's a great example of how to reboot a show and keep it interesting IMO. Clarkson (while a bit of an odd choice for a quiz show) is a very good host for it, they change the format a little (new lifeline and the safety net thing) but not too much and they kept it the same length as before. Family Fortunes and the EG are too stretched out because they haven't adapted the format to the time slot and end up being more fat than meat IMO.

Epic Gameshow - bluecortina2 - 18-04-2021

“Take your Pick’. But it would have to transmitted mid evening so that I could watch it whilst eating fresh fish and chips and a drinking a bottle of Jusoda like I used to in the 50’s.

Epic Gameshow proved to me that Bullseye hasn't aged well as a format.

Millionaire to me still feels relatively modern as a format and FF is quite durable whereas a lot of these formats show their age.

Epic Gameshow - Steve in Pudsey - 18-04-2021

To be fair the Dave Spikey revival proved that but that was down bad contestant casting.

The original Ant and Dec gameshow revival was great, the studio audience cheering the Central frontcap was a hell of a moment

The idea of stretching shows such as Bullseye out to an hour isn't a good one in my opinion. I think a reason why many quiz shows from the 1980's and 1990's worked so well is that they were fast and compact. Now I never saw the Dave Spikey or Ant And Dec versions so I can't comment on them but I loved the original Bullseye (the theme tune is playing in my head now). Tipping Point and The Chase are successful because the pacing of shows nowadays is I think far faster than those of 30-35 years ago and The Price Is Right could be a good fit for a revival because of its hour long format when it started in 1985/86 but that would be the only one that would be suitable unless say Strike It Lucky/Rich was somehow expanded with say 4 sets of contestants instead of three and a larger board.

I was never a fan of the Spikey version, I don't know why though. Honestly it ticked all the right boxes for me but never landed properly IMO.
