X Factor to return? - p2004 - 26-06-2022

I don't know if this makes any logical sense, but X Factor is one of my 'guilty pleasure' TV shows, so I will definitely look forward to it, if indeed it is actually coming back. Hopefully they'll go with something closer to the original format without the various twists and gimmicks which they brought in towards the end.

The X Factor was certainly a guilty pleasure of mine. What they need to do is go back to basics and make the acts the stars of the show not the judges. However I think a revival might struggle.

I think it’s too soon for them to want to play the nostalgia card, Pop Idol has been away longer and didn’t last long so genuinely could. But as with Epic Gameshow I think this often has a relatively short shelf life. An X Factor revival would probably not win ITV any new viewers compared to X Factor at the end of its life, but this would likely be better compared to what they currently have for A/W season. It was still doing at least a good 5-6 mill at the end, and in good demographics, so could make sense.

TVZone were reporting last night that he’s actually looking at a host of different channels that could air the show and is casting the net further than ITV, however I doubt that any channel other than ITV would actually take it.
If they are going to bring it back, it needs to definitely go back to basics. Entertaining room auditions, bootcamp (do they still get away with the six chair challenge?), judges houses, and then 10 live shows. Too many deviations from that format will over complicate the show.

If it is a choice between Idol and X Factor it's a no-brainer to bring back the brand that gave them 16 years of content rather than ran for two series two decades ago.
Seen plenty of comments they should try something new and talent shows are tired but the fact is they have been trying other content and it's not rating as well and the talent shows may not trouble the 10m mark anymore but they still double what most other shows deliver. The only question is whether the extra viewers cover the additional cost - but in a world where so much of TV is about the buzz off air a show like X Factor ticks the box in a way The Cube never can.
Ultimately when you look at The X Factor the wheels only really came off at the very end. It still has a much stronger foundation than Idol in the UK and a greater legacy to trade upon. I do think they should wait an extra year though due to the disruption of the Rugby World Cup to the weekend schedules in Sept/Oct.

It's very notable how Cowell's two big ITV shows have been dealt with in totally opposite ways. With BGT they try to keep the format as similar as possible each series and the judging panel hasn't changed in years (except Ashley Banjo sitting in for Simon). Whereas X Factor had a big new relaunch every year, and often even seemed to change the voting rules halfway through the run of live shows!
Perhaps the success of BGT (and Strictly) will make them want to go for a more traditional format, although I suspect that Cowell will be tempted to do a new spin on the show to try and make it 'relevant' to young audiences and contemporary music.
I guess ITV would look at it in a similar way to Dancing On Ice - it may not get the ratings it used to, but it should still be able to bring in a solid number for 2 hours over 10+ weeks.

I do think the DOI comparison is a very fair one. It doesn’t do numbers that excite anyone, but alongside the 2 hour drama it helps ITV have a very solid Sunday evening.
Does X Factor work if it’s shifted to any other time of year? It needs to avoid a schedule clash for Strictly, but that could mean it starts too late into the evening.
Also if ITV do an Idol of sorts, plus we don’t know where The Voice is going to settle in the schedule? (They’re already looking for people to audition for 2023), so those plus X Factor is a lot in 1 year.

Simon Cowell always says this as a means of making ITV make a decision.

I notice that the X Factor UK social media and YouTube channel are still active and regularly posting despite there not being a new series in years. Presumably this is operated by Syco rather than ITV?

“The public” are not one homogeneous blob. Many of us would love the show to come back, as long as it is done properly.

I'm not even too sure ITV would worry about where it sits alongside Strictly on a Saturday - it's as much about OTVX now. Indeed is the argument just to go head to head - Strictly will likely win but it should be more effective at bringing it down a peg or two than anything else they air against it would be. If they have the live results on a Saturday too that would encourage people to watch live rather than perhaps hold it over till Sunday.
