TV channels with sung jingles - Worzel - 01-03-2022

Upon stumbling across a clean version of the 2000s era QVC intro on a VHS cassette the other day, it reminded me that when the channel launched it had a sung jingle on some of their idents and when they closed the hour.

It got me thinking... what other UK TV channels have had sung jingles in their time? It could just be an American thing (see below from NBC) but they never really became a 'thing' over here. Why?

There was a promo in a similar vein to the NBC one that TVS made to promote their output in 1989 which contained a sung jingle https://youtu.be/4Dmc_eoL4AU

Interesting examples! Tempting to say that they simply sound old-fashioned, but that doesn't explain radio having had them. They certainly sound old-fashioned to me, though!

In fact, when have any of the main 5 channels had their own set-in-stone mnemonics?

...well, apart from Channel 4.

Apart from when one of the two generic ITV looks was in use, Yorkshire Television always used a variation of a tune I think was called Ilkley Moor Bah Tat. But neither that nor Fourscore are sung jingles.

I don't know if it's still in use, but didn't Cbeebies at launch have a jingle with the channel's name sang a couple of times? "Cbeebies! Cbeebies!"

CBBC with it's green logo before the current one also had ident music where someone sang "CBBC!" at the end.

Of course there's the "Ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-nick! Nickelodeon!" jingle from the 90s too, but that's a US import.

BBC One balloon idents, BBC One rhythm and movement idents, BBC One circles idents, Central television, Thames Television, LWT....

just a few to start off the list.

True but none of them (except maybe the ITV ones) are as well known or identifiable as Fourscore.

Channel 5 in the white "celebs pratting about with slogans" era.

ABC1's first lot.

Seem to remember E4's channel name being read out in a metallic / computer / robot voice on one set of idents.

Anyone who guessing ABC jingle from 1998 until 2021 would sound familiar to CBBC audience, given that current CBBC jingle (since 2016) pretty similar to ABC one, particularly 4-note jingle that ABC used before 'officially' only used for CBBC.

I did say "main 5 channels", so E4 and ABC1 don't count

Plenty of one-offs over the years, notably

https://youtu.be/0Y--DC6ANyg

I daresay there are Kenny Everett and Benny Hill examples.

I'm going to suggest that this counts

https://youtu.be/AeROdRz8wxs

Toby Anstis era CBBC had a competition for kids to make jingles, with predictably cringeworthy results.

Within individual programmes, TV Offal is an obvious example. The Big Breakfast's intro for the various games perhaps, and I imagine the Sky One simulcast of Chris Evans on Virgin might have included some of the sung jingles. Oh, and this from TM Century

BBC Three at (it’s first) launch used the Schoolhouse Rock song “Three is the Magic Number” - as did TV3 in Ireland, most obviously in its early years but it actually remained on their startup sequence all the way until the VMTV revamp.

TV channels with sung jingles - From The North - 02-03-2022

Off the top of my head, Central of course were very American in their 'bold' presentation style -
“It’s Chriii-iisstmaas!” From 1986

About 17 mins in

An early one - Granada on Channel 9 in 1968

TSW - one of the best bits of TV ever made, so bad it's good - The Opening Show in 1982

Tyne Tees - “We are the People Of The North” from 1991. Toe curlingly bad in an earnest way -
