Sports at the Olympics really need to be doable no matter where the Games are held. They did have options of hosting it in Brittany or South-East France (Biarritz or Bordeaux) but wanted to host it 10 000 miles away because that was the most obvious thing to do.... https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/50760437 That article also says that at the time of writing the women's tour would not go to Taihiti because the waves were too dangerous. Guess that will need to be sorted too. Apart from football, handball in Lille and sailing in Marseille are away from the Paris region. Tahiti has taken "away from the Paris region" to another level though. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - UTVLifer - 08-08-2021 Do we think the next games will be on location or in a virtual studio? I'm thinking yes for next year's Winter games, but they'll deffo be on location for Paris Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Brekkie - 08-08-2021 You've answered your own question there. I think regardless of the Covid situation the Beijing Winter Olympics would likely have been from Salford considering the 2018 games in South Korea were. Paris is pretty much as close to a home games as we can get without them being at home. I'd imagine next years World Cup might be done from Salford too (and probably ITV in Maidstone), though when they host a tournament in the UK they usually do so with the pledge to be on location from the QFs onwards if England are still involved. After the last year too they'll be questions about what can be done off-tube moving forward too. Qatar is a very compact tournament so having teams out there commentating might make sense, but in 2026 when you've got games in Canada, across the US and in Mexico it might be as logical to be based in the UK as it is a random US city. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - RhysJR - 08-08-2021 Agree with the above that Beijing was likely to be presented from Salford primarially. Guess it will depend on the rules and the playbook haow similar coverage is to the 2018 Games. If I recall 0000-0900 were presented from Peoyngchang and all commentary bar Ice Hockey was onsite in South Korea. There's no reason everything will not be onsite for the Commonwealth Games (especially as the shooting events that were going to be in India have been cancelled). The European Championships in Munich is the other multi-sport event next year and you'd strongly suspect that most of that would be onsite if there's no restrictions as they would be when all the event were seperated and pre-pandemic; I do wonder what the BBC coverage will be - if they present it like Glasgow/Berlin 2018 it's entirely possible they'll have Hazel/Gabby/Clare/others presenting stints of coverage from Salford in the same way they were all in the centre of Glasgow in 2018. Anyway here is the BBC credits and final montage. A bit of tear jerker it must be said: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS0iSnVx-Xc&t Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Jon - 08-08-2021 JAS84 post_id=33142 time=1628442208 user_id=881 Wrote:The fact the surfing needs to be in Tahiti instead of France though, means, is it really a suitable Olympic sport? Sports at the Olympics really need to be doable no matter where the Games are held.Tahiti is literally a part of France though and it’s very rare for things like surfing or sailing to be in the host city, due to the geography of many host cities. It’s just happens it’s even further away this time and I imagine the decision was taken in part to spread the benefit of hosting the games out. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Brekkie - 08-08-2021 The IOC seem to go through phases of wanting games to be as compact as possible to wanting to spread the benefit. At the moment their focus is on utilising existing venues where possible, even if that means spreading the games somewhat. Of course from a broadcasters point of view the more compact the better - or at least having events in clusters so personnel can be based in one location and get from sport to sport. Of course the winter games are usually in a city cluster and mountain cluster. Personally I quite like that this years games were studio bound for the BBC. A shame we missed some in venue presentation but I've not been a huge fan of the "Sochi Trolley" approach taken lately of just wondering around the Olympic park - or in the case of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, just on a random beach. Whilst it works as an element of the coverage, especially on the secondary linear channel, I think having a studio base where it is primarily all anchored from is important. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - UTVLifer - 08-08-2021 Any closing thoughts on the BBC's Olympic coverage guys? (And Eurosport too) Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - mark - 08-08-2021 UTVLifer post_id=33172 time= user_id=1030 Wrote:Any closing thoughts on the BBC's Olympic coverage guys? (And Eurosport too) I thought it was a really nice final edition of Today at the Games on BBC1 tonight. The montage shared above was a lovely note to end on. I think the BBC's coverage has been consistently brilliant despite the rights issues. Over on Eurosport, I like how they ended the final Tokyo Today with a closing shot on the balcony, zooming out to show the outside of their virtual building. They've done a decent enough job, although I feel the studio coverage has lacked the warmth and humour of the BBC. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - UTVLifer - 08-08-2021 Despite my initial doubts about Clare and Alex being put together for Today at the Games, once things got going, I've actually quite enjoyed the pairing and would be up for them being co-presenters for Today at the Games/the highlights show for future games. Why the BBC kept The One Show in the BBC1 schedule during the Olympics, only for it to go on its summer break as the games finish is puzzling, as it would have been better for Today at the Games to run from 7pm-9pm, which might have allowed things to be less rushed on the busy days Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - XIII - 08-08-2021 Jon post_id=33163 time= user_id=1050 Wrote:Tahiti is literally a part of France though and it’s very rare for things like surfing or sailing to be in the host city, due to the geography of many host cities. Who spotted the typo in the credits? :o Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Brekkie - 08-08-2021 I imagine it'll be similar shifts to 2018 for the Winter Olympics, though I suspect they'll have JJ Chalmers in the mix, probably overnight again. It would be good if they can find room for Sam Quek too, who has been the breakout star for me, but I suspect she might have to wait for the Commonwealth Games. It has actually been nice to have a bit of co-hosting these games, something we've not seen much of for a while. It's fair to say Alex Scott isn't as natural of a presenter as she is a pundit but from what I have seen of the highlights she has gained confidence and improved as time went on and worked well enough with Clare - but ultimately in a format which Clare is more than capable of hosting alone anyone added into the mix would feel like somewhat of a spare part. It didn't feel like a natural partnership, unlike Dan and Sam in the mornings, but should she be involved in future games she should come in as a much more confident presenter with her weekly role on Football Focus, which I guess begins next week.
