GB News - Inspector Sands - 26-08-2021 Seems I'm a bit late to this considering it's mentioned in that article but this is quite something Here's a presenter whose only qualification is to teach IT at a secondary school uses all his medical and scientific knowledge to challenge a microbiologist on supposed Covid cures. At least we know Calvin Robinson's middle name is Dunning Kruger But GB News not a British Fox News? https://twitter.com/miffythegamer/status/1430475577564278786?s=19 GB News - BBI45 - 26-08-2021 Inspector Sands post_id=36207 time= user_id=1003 Wrote:Seems I'm a bit late to this considering it's mentioned in that article but this is quite something I don't want to keep criticising the channel, but things like this don't help. It's reasonable to ask about alternatives, given how rapidly everything has developed over the last 2 years. However, I don't think it's acceptable for the presenter to be arguing with his guest (and expert on the subject matter) that because they're not willing to completely accept the findings of individual reports, they are not willing to accept any facts. I'm fairly sure most scientists would say that one study of one medication is not conclusive on it's suitability for use. The presenter seems to be taking the same approach as people who believe that vaccines cause autism. Taking one report that takes the view you would like, and ignoring reports that take the view you don't like. GB News - DavidWhitfield - 26-08-2021 Not just a problem on GB News, but it always baffles me when a learned professional is invited onto a programme only to be challenged and argued against by a presenter. You'd think these journalists would have a little more regard for a contributor who is an expert in their field than to assume their knowledge is superior after spending half an hour on Google. Massively disrespectful. It's an interviewer's job to challenge things which are known to not be true, sure. But challenge doesn't mean "give the opposing view." A presenter is rarely, if ever, an expert in any area of expertise, so they really shouldn't chip into discussions in that way. If they want a diametrically opposing view, then get another expert in who has it and facilitate a debate. GB News - UTVLifer - 26-08-2021 GB News have gone into their slightly shambolic breaking news mode after the explosion at Kabul Airport GB News - thecorrector - 26-08-2021 TVViewer256 post_id=36233 time= user_id=1039 Wrote:DavidWhitfield post_id=36219 time= user_id=1016 Wrote:Not just a problem on GB News, but it always baffles me when a learned professional is invited onto a programme only to be challenged and argued against by a presenter. Massively disrespectful.I agree to some extent, but it's an interviewer's job to put forward both sides of the argument. The other side of the argument in this case being what - that we should give dewormer to Covid patients even though health agencies have explicitly told people not to use it? This is really dangerous stuff, and goes well beyond the culture war. GB News - TVViewer256 - 26-08-2021 AJ post_id=36237 time= user_id=920 Wrote:I feel that I need to clarify what I meant as you've misunderstood (my fault due to not being clear enough). What I meant was that journalists shouldn't blindly accept anything that someone in a certain field says to them (e.g. take the case of SAGE's models overestimating deaths - if SAGE puts out another model, I'd expect a journalist to ask questions along the lines of 'how can we trust this', 'what went wrong last time and have you rectified it' etc).TVViewer256 post_id=36233 time= user_id=1039 Wrote:I agree to some extent, but it's an interviewer's job to put forward both sides of the argument. thecorrector post_id=36240 time= user_id=1692 Wrote:The other side of the argument in this case being what - that we should give dewormer to Covid patients even though health agencies have explicitly told people not to use it?I completely agree in this case, however I was under the illusion that David was referring to the challenging of experts in general. Happy to be proven wrong if he was referring purely to this incident and very similar incidents, though. GB News - DavidWhitfield - 26-08-2021 TVViewer256 - Your hypothetical example about a journalist questioning how SAGE puts together their COVID projections is entirely different to outright disagreeing with an expert about a matter they've studied for years in the manner we saw in the GB News clip. I think you and I understand each other's viewpoint on this now, and I don't believe we disagree with each other quite as much as you first assumed.
GB News - TVViewer256 - 26-08-2021 DavidWhitfield post_id=36251 time= user_id=1016 Wrote:TVViewer256 -Yes I'm completely agreed with you - I thought initially that you were referring to any critical questioning of experts (as I had missed the Calvin Robinson discussion earlier in the thread) but it's now clear you weren't. Essentially, we're fully agreed on this.
