New BBC Logo - brioalex - 17-08-2021 bilky asko post_id=34594 time= user_id=973 Wrote:brioalex post_id=34582 time= user_id=1062 Wrote:If so much thought was put into the 1997 BBC logo we wouldn’t have got the freakishly large C that fills the third block… both the old and the new blocks have there issues and the fact it’s causing this much drama is hilarious considering they are just three squares with one character inside each square! I actually quite like Gill and Johnston as fonts! But considering we’re spending so long discussing thought into logos I wanted to add my two penneth worth. I just find it strange that they used a custom version of Gill in the 1997 blocks but left the C looking overly large compared to the B’s including the padding around each letter. New BBC Logo - Joe - 17-08-2021 So. To be clear. I actually prefer the current logo to the forthcoming logo. I think there are various qualities which make it 'better', to my eyes, than the new one. Some of this is likely me being more used to the 1997 version, some of it is design decisions I would agree with. What I do have a problem with, though, is the kind of reductionism and hysteria being seen in this thread. For instance, harshy saying 'Looks like a logo designed by a kid it dosent look great, clearly got bored'. I mean, what kind of an argument is that? Many of the strongest brands in the world are simple, that's precisely why they are good: the Nike swoosh, the golden arches, the Apple logo. They've all been executed really well, but reducing your argument to 'a child could have done this', it's so weak. It's like those people who go to the Tate Modern and say 'a five year old could have done this'. Well they didn't, they didn't create the concept, they didn't get exhibited in the gallery. Stuff that looks good looks good regardless of how hard it was to make. And frankly I think saying 'this one looks like a child did it, but the 1997 one was created by the great man Martin Lambie-Nairn so it must be good!' feels like clutching at straws. I reckon if all Lambie-Nairn had produced in 1997 was the logo, we'd say it was pants. But he/they didn't, they created a whole system around it, imaging for all sub-brands and a tone around it all. It might be worth remembering that all we've (really) seen of this new brand is a logo. Not the most complicated shape in the world, but as I say, if it was more detailed or whatever it would end up really weak. We haven't seen (much of) it in motion, sub-brands, treatments, typography, brand voice, print, online, social media – any of it. It might all be terrible, it might be stellar. You're really welcome to prefer the old logo to the new one – like I say, I actually do. There's a proper skill in creating wordmarks and logos and refining the typography to be spot on. Check out Rob Clarke on Instagram for examples of sheer perfection. I don't think the new logo has maybe had such refinement, but that doesn't make it awful in my book. But let's not pretend it's as simple as 'this looks easy to recreate therefore it's poor.' I reckon that there's huge potential here for a much stronger brand for the BBC, instead of the decaying mess it has become in the past decade or more. Are you saying the BBC blocks weren't perfect squares? God, next you'll be telling me The Cube is in fact a rectangular cuboid.
New BBC Logo - EeveeSparkles - 18-08-2021 Now that I’ve seen it a bit more, I’m kind of starting to get used to this logo. I hope that when it launches in October we will see the end of the current BBC One idents that shall not be named!

Agreed and there is a big difference in the methodology between the 1997 logo and the new one. MLN et al had the freedom to choose a font which they believed would create the best logo for the corporation. And, even when they'd found it, they had to tweak it to achieve the effect they wanted. With this logo, the truly awful BBC Reith font was chosen because it's the BBC's in-house font and not for any aesthetic reason. And I just don't agree with the point of view that the "C" in the current logo is abnormally large. New BBC Logo - Robert Williams - 18-08-2021 I think Gill Sans looks great in logos and titles, but doesn't work so well when used for a body of text. Reith, on the other hand, is the opposite - looks fine for text, but where it has replaced Gill Sans, for example in the BBC News and BBC Weather logos, it looks visibly inferior. Agreed, although with Gill it's more of a weight thing, with Gill's weights somewhat skewed from the more standardised type weights of today. The regular/medium weight is almost semibold which, while being part of the reason it looks great for logos/signs, makes it unsuitable for any length of text. It's a shame that it is still marketed with that as the standard weight, because it leads to Gill being poorly used - especially considering that the light and book weights are actually very readable (although I have noticed their increased usage in the last few years). It looks rubbish I will say as it is, it dosent work Reith in those weirdly shape blocks, I am sorry my argument isn’t very detailed enough, but it dosent look right, where the 1997 logo is a classic which could work for decades more. New BBC Logo - DeMarkay - 19-08-2021 As others have said, Oneness is being replaced and it’s replacement is stunning. |
