Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - IanJRedman - 27-07-2021 Something that's been nagging me for a while... Does anyone else feel that a lot of the OBS pictures on BBC One HD are slightly soft? They're not unwatchable by any means, just rather muted and lacking in resolution/contrast. Is there some kind of compression involved in backhauling the feeds to the BBC? I know there's a 60>50hz standards conversion going on - does that affect the resolution? Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - rkolsen - 28-07-2021 I don’t really see a place to talk about NBC Sports other than here. I talked to someone about there UHD HDR coverage. Unfortunately due to COVID they weren’t able to get as many people over to Japan to handle the UHD work flow so they appear to be down converting the UHD feed to 1080p HD and send it to the US where it’s sent to the affiliates via IP in upscaled UHD HDR. NBC is offering 52 Localized UHD Streams all are carried through YouTube TV; 73% of Comcast’s footprint; and a handful of Altice, Fubu and Verizon Fios footprints. I talked to a NBC station engineer. The stations receive the UHD signals via an IP feed. They have a new master control switcher that allows them to insert their regular top of the hour IDs, station bugs, severe weather alerts, tickers and commercials onto the UHD feed. The UHD feed is then sent to the Comcast head end or YouTube TV. I caught a bit of the live opening ceremony and the HDR feed carried over and The Today Show carried over (it was 1080i - half from New York) and it looked good upscaled to HDR as did the local news. I was told this system will remain in place for future events such as Beijing, Notre Dame Football and other events that are in UHD that previously only aired National advertisements. Good way to circumvent the UHD restrictions. I think they will go all in with true UHD HDR for Paris, so let’s see what happens. I also recall there is still a national UHD feed available for DIRECTV and Dish Network subscribers, or I’m wrong? Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - dvboy - 28-07-2021 The BBC are being a bit flexible with the timing, which is good. Dan and Sam took over presentation around 5:35 this morning and started Olympic Breakfast properly with titles at 5:54. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Brekkie - 28-07-2021 A flipper used on the coverage earlier for the Olympic headlines. Sadly as it seems to be a bit of a Wirful Wednesday after a couple of bits of good news it wasn't providing a welcome distraction. Also overnight the BBC were unable to cover the Rugby 7s semi final at 3am with swimming and rowing on BBC1 and the red button. Just hope nobody set their alarm for it. I would have thought with coverage originating in UHD, and therefore entirely progressive, then a 60>50 conversion would be higher quality due to the lack of interlacing artifacts. That is if the conversion happens in the progressive domain of course, and it isn't downscaled to 1080i60 beforehand. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - mark - 28-07-2021 I'm finding Discovery+ absolutely fine to use on the Android app - it's easy to find the coverage I want and access any of the live streams with a single tap. On my Samsung smart TV, it's easy enough to browse and find what you want but, for some reason, it takes three clicks to get to any stream. When you select a stream from the main screen, it takes you to an info screen for that stream, where you have to select 'play'. But even that doesn't take you to the stream - you then get a pop-up box that says 'this event has already started', where you have to click a button that says 'watch live' (which is the only option). While pressing a button on my remote three times instead of one isn't exactly the greatest hardship in the world, it does feel a bit unnecessary. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - RhysJR - 28-07-2021 BBC Red Button continuity changed today - Tom Gayle (until 08:00) and Jenny Drummond today with Ben Cajee and Katie Shanahan for the first four days. Giess they'll rotate agian on day 9. For those wondering about the feeds shown in the Athletes' Village, I've seen a few athletes on Instagram post stories featuring feeds like below with the DXNumber DOG. Don't think there was commentary from what I can hear either.
Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - James2001 - 28-07-2021 I might be wrong, but I think because the rights were handled by the EBU, that ITV could have had coverage of the olympics up until 2012, not that they ever did after 1988. Certainly that's why Eurosport always showed them until then. Not sure if Eurosport can show EBU events any more since TF1 sold out to Discovery. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - JT95 - 28-07-2021 Despite her not needing to prove herself, I’d like to just mention how brilliantly Hazel Irvine has been these Games so far. She really has been a calm and inviting voice, and really does handle moving sports around One and red button really well, actually talking directly to the viewer and explaining in a simple manner what will be shown when. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Brekkie - 28-07-2021 It's so nice she has basically the main live slot at the moment, though a fairly lengthy shift. She has always been an excellent presenter of the games- indeed talking of ITV wasn't she part of their team in 1988? Sam Quek is also shining in the mornings and quite usefully able to switch from presenter to general Olympics pundit when required. She has clearly done her homework on the events. JJ Chalmers arguably with the pick of the shifts in week one with the swimming and rowing finals. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Newsdog - 28-07-2021 What was looking as perhaps a very messy BBC2/BBC1 swap with the GB dressage rider in midflow was handled really well. BBC1 viewers joined half way through and BBC2 stayed with it until the marks were awarded a few minutes later. Yeah, transmitting 1080p HDR was probably the easiest way to get the footage from Japan and have it upconverted here in the US. As far as I know DirecTV and Dish both offer nationalized feed of NBC’s main programming channel in UHD, I believe the other major systems in other markets (even Comcast) that aren’t listed as well. I believe I read in one of NBCU’s cable technical head end bulletins that they were setting things up so local ads could run on UHD feeds. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - rkolsen - 28-07-2021 Anyone know how the OBS graphics are generated? I know there’s an OBS feed outputted in several languages. However for several events NBC has changed descriptions for example the OBS has an event listed “M 400 Free Final” while NBC had it as “M 400 Free F”. I know the IOC is very demanding on their graphics and how they must be used. A couple questions:
