I noticed on quite a lot of ITV3 episodes recently we've had episodes where the credits scroll on the final scene, and a couple of episodes where they scroll in silence. We're on the eve of the introduction of the generic credits- I wonder if the producers were trying to do these things with the credits while they were still able to?

The ECP animating on and off screen didn't last long from what I remember.
Back to regular credits on the second episode though (and the off-air video on YouTube shows the original broadcast was the same)- weren't the generic credits always consistently used at first?

On the Mike and Linda wedding episode last week there were a final few words spoken between the credits finishing and the end cap.

One of the reasons I don't like generic credits- no sense of individuality between programmes, no way to do something unique that may fit in with the episode in question, just a template that's the same on every show and every episode.
Seems interesting that nearly 22 years on ITV still persist with generic credits (which are even blander than they were in 2000), but none of the other main channels have adopted them. T4 used them for a while (even pre-dating ITV's use of them), even on repeats and imports, but Channel 4 never used a generic style outside of the T4 strand (barring repeats of shows that had been made for T4 anyway, including the E4 repeat of the Hollyoaks omnibus- which kept using them for a while after they'd gone elsewhere on T4).

Normal credits on today's first episode, generic credits on the second- really does seem like it wasn't consistent at first.
Don't recall it being like this when we saw them introduced on the Emmerdale repeats though, I'm sure when they appeared they were on every episode afterwards.
Interesting to note as well that the stretched Coronation Street logo and text during the credits shows it was clearly designed for 16:9 but squashed into 4:3. Still over another 15 months from this point until the first 16:9 episode of Corrie.

I notice that the 'smokey' right-aligned credits are now the standard on the ITV3 episodes. IIRC the colours were different for each programme, for example Corrie was yellow Emmerdale was green, The Bill was blue etc.
Of course, without the ECPs they were designed to contain, they look rather odd today.

Yes - as bland as the generic black credits now used are they don't look out of place when repeated elsewhere.
Did the soaps avoid the brief blue stripes generic credits? IIRC they may have had their own backgrounds initially, in the generic format.

You'd also think a version without the hearts ECP layout of the time would have existed for international sales, though suspect many other broadcasters were using their own generic ECPs then anyway.

Those double episodes began in 2002, I think, or maybe 2001. Only occasional at first before getting more and more common, think it was 2003 when it became full time.
Does look like, with Corrie and Emmerdale at least, the generic credits were the only version that was made, recordings from Canada seems to bare that out, same with Australian broadcasts of The Bill. Interestingly though, Crossroads Mark 2 did have proper credits, at first at least, and they were seen on the ITV2 repeats.

After several episodes of generic credits, it was back to regular credits (over a shot of the outside of Freshco) at the end of yesterday's hour long Fresho siege episode- really does seem like they were inconsistently applied at first, on Corrie at least. I know the live 40th anniversiary episode also had regular credits, so does one of the French episodes from November that's on the Network DVD- will be interesting to see just how often they keep appearing on the next few weeks of ITV3 episodes (I don't recall ever seeing them in 2001 though, so presumably they'd stopped popping up by then).
Makes you think that they didn't want the generic credits, with the way it keeps switching back and forth.

Also interesting that this video has today's first ITV3 episode (12 October 2000) with proper credits (presumably recorded from the original screening- I do actually seem to remember watching it at the time and noting it had "old style" credits over the final scene rather than the new generic style), but on ITV3 we had it with generic credits:

However all the networks do make producers have their credits fit a certain template, generally to make them fit an ECP style.

Yes they do, but at least they have their own backgrounds and fonts and a choice of whether to scroll or now, so it still fits in with the show. It's not just static, black and the house font like ITV is.
