Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - RR - 27-07-2021 As Rdd says, all the European court was saying is that local legislation was valid, so French TV is subject to similar French legislation.. However, remember the reason for the legislation, and that is to ensure that certain events of national significance are available on nationally available free to air channels - and those are available free to at least 95% of the population. The BBC additional red button channels would not qualify, as they aren't on Freeview, and being available on just satellite and cable plus the iplayer is not going to get them to 95%. Note that for a while Channel Five didn't qualify as its online service didn't have sufficient homes with their live channel, and outside the main BBC channels only the primary channels of ITV, C4 and C5 qualify, not their secondary channels. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - mark - 27-07-2021 So it turns out that NBC are using 5 different sets - indoor and outdoor - in multiple locations, including the Hilton Tokyo Odaiba and the International Broadcast Centre. Newscaststudio has a helpful gallery: https://www.newscaststudio.com/setstudio/nbc-tokyo-olympics/ Quite different designs, but the same wood features in all of them in some form. Some look better than others. Also interesting to see Steve Kornacki featuring in the coverage - obviously accompanied by a screen. I know I complained to the BBC and OFCOM at the time the decision was made - tried to find their responses but I don't seem to have them. For me it is so obviously a situation where the "crown jewels" list should be absolutely upheld, but as is often the case in these situations that isn't how it seems to play out. Indeed broadcasters have had 5 years to challenge it, but sadly the BBC prioritised a deal with Eurosport over standing up for the licence fee payer. I suspect their deal prevents them challenging Eurosports rights to have the rights too.Rdd post_id=31041 time= user_id=1409 Wrote:I guess it depends on the wording of the French law and how the courts would interpret it. As for France - I did think there was an exception within the Eurosport deal for the Paris games which recognised the importance of free to air coverage in the host country but I can't find any article which suggests that. On that subject though it raises a question for some of those here who've been lucky enough to go to the games and involved in the coverage - what gets fed into the athletes village (and presumably to the media too?). Do they have to rely on the local coverage or do they get a tailored service, presumably based around the OBS feeds? Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Jon - 27-07-2021 I think it’s an issue with the Crown Jewels list itself, which was invented for a different time. The Olympics has always been on it, but all the Olympics has never been able to be shown on shown on qualifying channels. But it was never an issue traditionally because it was just accepted that the FTA broadcasters would only have one or two platforms to show the action. So a reworking of how the list works that insists on any simultaneous coverage to be shown on a qualifying broadcasters online platforms as long as it’s freely available, if the main outlet of that broadcast is also showing other action from the event in question. I don’t think there would be any political will to make that happen though. To complete you, NBC is not only using these five sets, but also another for Telemundo near the New National Stadium, a virtual studio in Telemundo Center, and ancillary facilities in the USA, mostly at Stamford, Englewood Cliffs (where CNBC is based) and Miami. The sets were, as it have been recently too, built by blackwalnut, with lighting by LDG and video screens provided by Planar (the former Leyard). What surprises me is how NBC managed to have such big operation in these Games, even with the pandemic situation. NBC always have a big operation in the Games, which is no surprise, but I am shocked how did so in this situation. From what you said, in the Olympic Village they might have an internal fibre TV network, different from that of J:COM, so that's why they are receiving OBS clean feeds, which works in that sense due to the nature of the Games. Yep, would expect most places in the village to have access to OBS output from all the venues. OBS are also doing a thing called 'athlete moments' - essentially a webcam at certain venues where athletes can talk to fans / family / friends / whoever, noticed it briefly during the taekwando coverage. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Newshound47 - 27-07-2021 The BBC have re- voiced the Gymnastics from earlier with as live commentary from Matt, Christine and Craig covering the Final Performances in the GB v Italy Battle when on the live coverage none of the GB women on Bars or the final Italian on Beam were shown until after GB’s bronze was confirmed - Matt’s announcement of GB winning Bronze was also re-recorded. Completely missed that they'd won the bronze and all I got from watching Hazel and co. (but clearly not as closely as I should have been) was the news about Simone Biles. I'm liking this time that the BBC have returned to continuous coverage rather than inserting a break for trailers at the change of every shift and it's nice to have the handovers between presenters back as a result too. I'm guessing Gabby will take over the 9-3 slot from Hazel from Friday once the athletics starts. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Brekkie - 27-07-2021 Ryle Nugent doing the triathlon for Eurosport and was on the Rugby 7s for the BBC so I'm guessing he's probably OBS. Is OBS commentary all originating in Tokyo? And putting to one side thoughts on the technical side I really do like the presentation Eurosport have for these games, especially their menu highlighting key moments. The title sequence itself it a bit uninspired though - obviously very generic to be used across Europe. |
