Perhaps it was a step too far for some to go from 'Yorkshire' or 'Tyne Tees' to something that sounded like a cable channel. :?

Not really - the PSB status more than pays for itself, and not just through the EPG position. I suspect shareholders will see through BritBox too that moving forward in a subscription manner wouldn't be sustainable in the short term, never mind the long term, and when you look at the rating s for the highest placed non-PSB channels on Freeview such as Sky Arts, Dave and Quest it would be pretty dumb to take that risk.
Better to get OFCOM to chip away at the requirements, but to be fair ITV haven't really done that for a decade or so now, having had the biggest burdens cut in the years previously.
