Premier League 2021-2 Season - Television - Brekkie - 16-12-2021

Always a shame the cup competetitions are always first in the line to sacrifice matches if the need arises but if there is a full suspension I suspect you're right. I think they'll avoid it though if they can even if just a couple of matches go ahead this weekend. Sadly I don't think we're far off a no-crowd situation again too, though in the short term if they go ahead there is another round of matches after Christmas to be broadcast in full anyway and I think BT has a round in the New Year too.

They didn't even cancel the FA Cup during lockdown, so there's pretty much no chance of that happening. Not least because the major problem with lower league clubs playing behind closed doors is that they lose money, and the quickest way for lower league clubs to get money is through the FA Cup.

The problem is if matches have to be stopped for several weeks when do they catch up. They can’t go much further past the end of the season due to international matches and the early start of next season due to the World Cup.

And there goes Man Utd v Brighton on Saturday.

I suspect all matches will be stopped soon. Things can change very quickly.

Well, I appreciate it'll be a tight squeeze, but it's a bit of a leap to go from the current situation to suggesting they cancel the FA Cup. Pretty much every Cup competition that has been interrupted has managed to be completed, even if that involves carrying the final over to the next season - as was the case with the Scottish Cup Final played last December and the Women's Cup Final played this December - and if worst comes to worst that's what they'll presumably do here. Even if they get weeks behind schedule, if they get the quarter-finals complete that's only four clubs remaining.

I know you're suggesting that something will need to give but the FA Cup is no less important than any of the other matches that need to be played. For many of the clubs it is incredibly important.

For what it's worth, I don't think it'll get to a behind-closed-doors scenario if only because the more pressing problem at the moment appears to be actually getting a team together to play the matches, let alone deciding who will watch them. But as Chris Whitty mentioned this morning, all signs currently point to this being a particularly bad but mercifully brief wave of cases, given how quickly it's spreading, and if matches are being called off because pretty much everyone on the team has it, that would presumably mean most teams will be over the worst fairly quickly.

So while obviously nobody knows, it doesn't seem likely this'll be something that will go on for months and so you could probably suggest that what we've got now is something almost comparable to a particularly bad winter. Indeed, you can look back at the last time the dates fell as they do this year, 2010, when on the weekend before Christmas, only three of the ten Premier League matches took place because of bad weather - https://www.skysports.com/football/fixtures-results/18-december-2010 That was a particularly bad winter and lots of games got called off, so it's not an entirely unprecedented scenario.

Although it looks like it, there hasn't been that much of a ballooning of fixtures in the ten years since then, there was still the same number in Europe and so on, and more matches were called off in those days because not everyone had undersoil heating and so on, and everything got completed. So while it looks pretty grim at the moment, I think we're a long way off having to abandon seasons or competitions.

Increasing calls including Brentford FC for the Premier League to postpone this weekend's programme in it's entirety for a 'stock take' before making more longer term decisions. This might be a sensible move considering all factors at present.

The PL have said they have no plans to do so, and will "continue its current fixture schedule where safely possible". Can't see it happening myself, I imagine the PL are keen to get games played when they can and worry about rescheduling a few fixtures they can slot in as-needed rather than rescheduling an entire matchday as well.

They said something like that in March 2020 and then a shutdown was voted on the next day. Things can change very quickly.

The PL essentially led back then - once they pulled then others soon followed.

Spurs v Liverpool the big fixture of the weekend and presumably Spurs not out of the woods from last week's outbreak yet. As much as it isn't ideal for Sky to lose that fixture a week out from Christmas it won't be the end of the world if it is rescheduled in the business end of the season.

P.S. Another UEFA draw tonight, this time for the 2022/23 Nations League. Have these rights been awarded yet - I thought the initial Sky deal was only for two cycles? Indeed think the European Qualifiers rights expire this season too.

I think Sky has already renewed but with the nature of the teams involved I suspect they will be more and more coverage and debate about if all England matches should be added to the List for the required live FTA coverage.

Looks like only two matches will be played on Saturday now after four further postponements, Southampton v Brentford, Watford v Crystal Palace and West Ham United v Norwich City all postponed as is Sunday’s match of Everton and Leicester.

Wolves v Chelsea might be next I suspect. Chelsea are somehow still playing tonight but have already had cases in the squad and we know how infectious this variant is.

Premier League 2021-2 Season - Television - BcastCornwall - 16-12-2021

Southampton v Brentford, Saturday, 18 December 15:00 GMT
Watford v Crystal Palace, Saturday, 18 December 15:00 GMT
West Ham United v Norwich City, Saturday, 18 December 15:00 GMT
Everton v Leicester City, Sunday, 19 December 12:00 GMT

All gone.

Current list of unscheduled matches is now 12, including Chelsea matches due to World Club Championships.

Three Liverpool players have tested positive but their game tonight will go ahead. But it increases the chances that the weekend game with Spurs will end up being postponed if further players test positive

Sunday's march between Newcastle United Manchester City will now kick off 15 minutes earlier at 14.00 instead of 14.15. This after a request by Sky.

But Pep Guardiola is undergoing Covid testing so who knows if the match will actually go ahead.
