RE: X Factor to return? - telebox2001 - 27-06-2022

The only network I can see picking it up is Channel 5, and we know how that will end.

RE: X Factor to return? - eyeTV - 28-06-2022

Channel 5 or Sky I guess. Can't see C4 picking it up. Those channels would see the show get even less exposure.

The typical singing talent contest is so overdone hence why ITV went for Masked Singer & more recently Starstruck. There needs to be a twist on the format rather than a straight singing contest to generate interest. The Voice seems to be on life support but the blinds still do ok as a point of difference from other shows. Other singing acts can feature on BGT.

They really should look to the next entertainment format rather than looking back hoping to emulate the glory days of XF.

Exactly. It's also as if people forget that shows had to be axed in the first place, mostly because of the endless amount of celeb specials. Pointless will reach that stage soon and within a couple of years people will demand it returns as if that erases the fact it was never off the telly and outstayed its welcome.

But linear TV has to fill hours and sadly there is a distinct lack of original ideas when it comes to light entertainment at the moment, both domestically and in the international formats market which has only really seen The Masked Singer emerge in recent years.

Nobody is denying the last few years of X Factor weren't problematic but when you look back in hindsight it was much stronger for longer than you think - it only really absolutely collapsed in the last couple of years and that was arguably down to on screen changes rather than the overall concept.

RE: X Factor to return? - DeMarkay - 28-06-2022

I could really see it being on Sky Max/Showcase or even Sky Arts.

Well, the new civilian Pointless episodes will no longer have Richard Osman on them, we don't know yet how viewers will react to the replacement guest co-hosts. It could kill the show, it could revitalise it.

I'd also suggest allegations such as the below article from two years ago could resurface if X Factor does return...

...there's also this from another former X-Factor contestant, which though seems to be more around the music industry in general doesn't really help X-Factor's image...

I agree there's not much originality around but the examples given haven't been massive hits and these were amongst the most popular shows back in their day. Meanwhile, reboots of Lingo and Blankety Blank that most people were shaking their heads at when first announced have performed well and can grow further still.

The X Factor would get 6m if it came back no worries but if it's the same uninspired song choices then people will switch off again. There's plenty of known tracks that haven't been performed including from the likes of Queen who you would think by watching TXF only had three or four hits.

BGT barely got that for it's finale against poor opposition

I suspect this is another reason ITV are unwilling to go near it. A lot of unpleasantness and hushed up stories will be exposed

RE: X Factor to return? - telebox2001 - 28-06-2022

That podcast was very well done, obviously done by two girls who put "x" at the end of every text or DM (see what I did?) but they did their research. It made Love Island look like Care Bears by comparison.

The psychological tricks and dark arts used to steer the show (such as Janet Devlin's camera script theory) are well-documented, there was a Eurovision betting blogger who covered XF in the off-season who's sadly no longer with us who analysed it all brilliantly. But then again Saara "the songbird from abroad" Aalto and YLE hired Brian Friedman in to do her Eurovision staging and she came second bottom.

RE: X Factor to return? - Omnipresent - 28-06-2022

ITV's relationship with Simon Cowell will probably end soon.

BGT isn't going to continue forever and various new formats from Simon (Food Glorious Food, Red Or Black, Walk The Line) have not worked.

Ratings tend to drop off after the auditions. Unsurprising given the negative feeling about some contestants.

6m is a reasonable prediction for TXF but numbers would collapse if they didn't get it right.

RE: X Factor to return? - Brekkie - 29-06-2022

Sadly 4m is probably the benchmark now. It should get 6-8m if it goes well, but I think an expectation of 6m from the off is setting it up for a fail, but you would hope it can build towards that. Indeed it launched with less than that back in 2004, as did Pop Idol in 2001.

If we're talking overnights then yeah there's no chance of 6m. I think Strictly is the only series on TV to average over 6m in the overnights in the past year (by quite a margin). Masked Singer, Takeaway and BGT were all around 5m, with Bake Off and I'm a Celeb around 5.5m (although I guess IAC could rise back in the jungle). Apprentice was about 4.5m, and new successes such as Starstruck, I Can See Your Voice, Limitless Win, The Wheel etc are around 3-4m.

Obviously it's not just all about the overnight and the shows timeshift to different degrees - Bake Off adds about 3m in 7 day consolidated whereas some others only add half a million. BGT was adding about 2m for its audition shows this year taking them to about 7m overall. I guess any X Factor or Idol reboot would have more emphasis on the pre-recorded episodes (like the new American Idol), which seem to be more popular and lend themselves better to viewing on ITVX.

RE: X Factor to return? - tellyblues - 29-06-2022

To be clear, I was talking about 6m for a launch episode and thereafter it depends how the show performs. TXF would be returning from a long break whereas the other shows may have had at most just a year off due to Covid and some can only manage so much for whatever reason.
