God, that promo used to drive my dad nuts, he threatened to smash the TV whenever it came on.

Then CBBC made a parody of it that was just as annoying...

(This was ridiculously exciting at the time).

Not wanting to take this too off-topic, but "Welcome to Channel 5 on satellite"? I know it was put on analogue sat because of the various issues with its terrestrial signal but never knew it had its own launch sequence when it arrived on there.

I can't remember if that video was just part of the promo loop that was running on satellite for a week or two. I seem to recall that it just suddenly started showing 'normal' output on satellite one morning.

My local terrestrial transmitter came on line a few months after the station had launched. The test transmissions started with those C5 Colour Bars (not a proper test signal at all) and tone between 8am and 5pm Mon-Sat (to allow VCR retuning to be conducted), then a month or so later, actual programmes, but with promos in all the ad breaks. Followed by ads and programmes from the official launch day

The Spice Girls video was the first "thing" aired on Channel 5, March 30 1997 on terrestrial launch. It wasn't AFAIK part of the promo loop that went out for a few days beforehand. Not sure about Channel 5 on satellite, I was under the impression it just popped up one day.

This has a similar tune as ABC/Nine Network' "Still the One" campaign, which Sky borrowed directly the next year...

Yes. I don't think The Spice Girls featured at all until the launch evening. I do recall them being used in stings for a week or two afterwards though ?

There's this clip evidently recorded at the same time, featuring Jack Docherty. Wonder if there were any others?

(Also what's up with the strange aspect ratio on some of the stuff from that sequence and the above clip - looks almost like 16:9 squashed into 4:3?)

They definitely featured in a promo before launch, saying "Channel 5, Easter Sunday, 6pm".

Without the pre-intro headlines, this would genuinely seem like satire

When that station(KWGN) was rebranding to that look, which was a great look , they don't use that anymore, they held a contest for local viewing area bands (Denver and other parts of Colorado) to make a new theme for their morning show that was the winning song, eventually, they switched to an instrumental version before this look was killed off. The group was called Ken K. and the Thump Brothers.

I'll add some for the thread too

Here's some American ones, the same song on 3 stations ( I can only find two examples though)

You can’t forget the jingle that played when ITV returned after the strike of ‘79!
