Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Brekkie - 26-07-2021

It's often not the case of wanting all sports - can just be one, with the Olympics a rare chance to watch the likes of Equestrian, Badminton etc. or for fans of sports with wider coverage getting the full days play in the tennis or golf for example.

Agree though the extra app seems more effort than it probably is. We're used to navigating the red button/iPlayer and if you're familiar with Netflix / Prime you'd be comfortable using these. I don't think the Eurosport app is the best designed and sometimes the description is something like "Aus v NZ - Mens Round 2" with the associated picture not being clear what the sport is.

I know but my point was they could have charged a little bit more if they’d marketed it probably and taken in more money than they will have. Although I suspect they wanted to use it to push Discovery + subscriptions, but the service is the only major one that doesn’t appear on LG TVs of course and I imagine others.

And as has already been said the pan-European extra streams are useless because what important varies on a nation by nation basis.

They need to try and make the extra streams more country specific in future. Or have a larger number of streams and choose which ones are available in each country.

Of course the other thing is Discovery haven’t really paid anything for these games, they’ve sacrificed rights for the next few games, where they would have had to anyway.

As I have read your messages, I am thinking of what Claro Sports is doing here in Latin America. They are broadcasting from Mexico City, and their coverage has been faultless, but their programming scheduling is poor sometimes. They are doing four channels of 24/7 coverage, including repeats, however, some people have been complaining on social media of important sports being restricted to their digital platforms, with these channels mostly bringing the main events and those focusing on Latin American athletes.

I liked their coverage, their presenters are top notch (in some cases, boring at times) and lack the hyperbolistic and entertaining style of Latin American sports commentators. Their Opening Ceremony had limited and short commercial breaks, all three of them, airing during the Parade of Nations, and their ceremonies presenter, local legend Alberto Lati, only made remarks when necessary.

Moving back to Eurosport, it is so sad that Discovery is trying to maximise the coverage of the Olympic Games, but their OTT and multichannel structure is far from being at its best. The lack of connection between Eurosport Player, Discovery+ and Amazon Prime is not helping either. Additionally, Eurosport has a big operation which encompasses almost all the languages spoken in Europe, and, sadly, it is not being utilised at its full capacity.

Is someone able to explain simply the offering from Discovery+ and Eurosport ? Are they the same? And if I subscribe to Discovery+ do I get access to the Eurosport channels?

For what I saw, they are plans to merge the Eurosport Player to Discovery+, however, they later merged it into the existing Eurosport website. The Eurosport Player offers a reduced selection of content, mostly what is broadcast on the 2 main and 7 extra feeds, whilst Discovery+ and Joyn in Germany offer up to 30 live streams.

I'm not sure I should try… but my advice, if you only want the Olympics and assuming you don't mind planning your own schedule, would be to just get a one month subscription for £7 directly from Eurosport (i.e. eurosport.co.uk). Pros: every single OBS event feed, and the ability to replay all of them, and very high picture quality (1080i and I think it's 50fps?). Cons: still quite a few sports without commentary (although for all those with commentary, you can also switch it off, plus the in-venue crowd commentary is often audible - because there are no crowds - and can be less intrusive because they shut up at significant points in play).

I think the main benefit of Discovery+ is if you also want to watch a shark documentary and all 19 seasons of Say Yes to the Dress.

Where it's messy is there are about three different ways of getting Eurosport, which get you either the 'norma' two channels, the normal channels plus several Olympic 'curated' channels or everything including the direct feed. And there's a Discovery+ offer which has Eurosport for the Olympics but is £2 cheaper and confusingly doesn't include the word "sport"…

I'm watching through an ordinary computer and an iPhone. It gets more complicated if you have a fancy television.

Crystal clear now, presumably?

Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Brekkie - 26-07-2021

If you're brand new to Eurosport Player I don't think you can subscribe now - you have to go through Discovery+. If you have previously subscribed though you can reactivate your account.

I signed up to a trial with Eurosport as an add on to Amazon Prime which has Eurosport 1 & 2 and the seven extra channels. It doesn't appear to have the additional sport specific streams.

Eurosport Player has Eurosport 1 & 2 but not the seven extra channels. It does have the additional sport specific streams though, and seems to be all of them. Many did appear to be commentary free but some have the option to change the commentary to English, but commentary free seems to be the default.

I've not tried Discovery+ so hopefully someone else can confirm.

A short break on this Eurosport mess, but I wanted to show you images of some of the studio sets being used by broadcasters around the world. For size considerations, images are available on spoiler boxes.

First of all, NBC, which, for its morning and primetime coverage, is using an outdoor studio for the first time. Designed by Bryan Higgason (HD Studio) and Paul Benson (Primate Studio), it allows for the use of augmented reality and it can welcome additional furniture. The set is located at the rooftop of the Hilton Tokyo Odaiba hotel, which allows for live views of Tokyo Bay.

North of the American border, in Canada, CBC/Radio-Canada has gone leaner for its coverage, with coverage being originated at home, from the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto for the English service, and the Maison de Radio-Canada, the headquarters of the French service in central Montreal, which is being redeveloped. Both bases have identical sets, small but functional, which were designed as ever by Kyle Sanvictores.

In Mexico, Televisa is also doing coverage mostly from home, with a sizeable presence in Tokyo. In their Mexico City HQ, they are also using a pack of 4 unique virtual sets for their daily magazine show, which look very impressive, all running with Unreal Engine:

In Brazil, TV Globo, which impressed with a sprawling three-story glassbox studio in Rio, has gone much more small-scale. Their Rio-based coverage from Globo’s Jardim Botânico headquarters is coming from the studio normally used by breakfast programme Bom Dia Brasil, with the bones of the former’s studio set used for their set design, developed, as it is with much of Globo’s sets, by their in-house design unit, led by Alexandre Arrabal, Fábio Figuereido and Gilberto Castañón. The modifications are led by a large videowall with live feeds from Tokyo, with simultaneous tracking to resemble a real window to Tokyo Bay, based on the concept of their Red Square studio used on the last World Cup. It is also being used by cable channel SporTV, which also uses their main studio in the Canais Globo (old Globosat) HQ in the Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood. The Tokyo bureau studio is also used as an ancillary facility.

The Seven Network in Australia is also doing coverage at home, with the NEP Docklands Studios in Melbourne once again being their home base. The set is an update from that used in Rio, developed and designed by the NEP Docklands design team.

In New Zealand, the bulk of the TVNZ/Sky coverage is coming from their Television Centre HQ in Victoria Street, Auckland. The set is mostly a re-hash of the set used for the 2019 Rugby World Cup coverage, produced for Spark Sport, with added augmented reality, and it was designed by TVNZ's internal design unit, Blacksand. Sky Sport's main studio in the Mount Wellington suburb is also being used as a secondary studio.

I will present another look at worldwide studios very soon, but now, let's move back into the Eurosport stream fiasco.

(EDIT 2021-07-27: I have included some additional information about the Globo set)

This is not correct. If you subscribe to Discovery+ or Eurosport Player directly (as Brekkie says above the latter may not be possible for brand new customers) you get streams of everything from the Olympic games, with commentary options (different languages, ambient sound only) including on-demand replays as well as live streams of Eurosport 1 and 2. Personally I find this very easy to navigate too.

If you subscribe to the Eurosport Player "Channel" (i.e. add-on) on Amazon Prime Video, you are limited to the linear channels Eurosport 1-9. I would not recommend doing this as it's an inferior product (poor/non-existent labelling of extra streams for other events for a start) and the only benefit of doing so is if you intend to use it on a decive that is supported by the Prime Video app and not the Discovery+ or Eurosport Player app.

Thanks a lot for the correction dvboy. I sometimes mishandle information, so apologies for that.

No worries I did edit my post to add a few things too.

Forgot to add that English commentary on Discovery+ and Eurosport Player streams often seems to depend on whether OBS are doing commentary or not. They are not providing world feed commentary for every game or match of every round of every sport.

Does anyone know what that little white robot type thing is at the foot of the BBC Sport table? Sure it hasn’t been there before..
