Of course in recent years the BBC presentation has been more about an advert of their own with idents almost secondary to that. That's why I don't believe the BBC had to quietly and nervously step into a rebrand - they're happy to blow their own trumpet at Christmas.

I think it was mainly 2016, 2017 and 2018 that had John Lewis style ads that had idents centred around the ads. Of course 2015 was Sprout Boy, but 2016 and 2018 were both quite commercial looking with Oneness and the Wonderland themes. I hope we don't get a repeat of 2018's. They were dull.

I think the problem was that they marketed a TV channel. Not a department store. I think #XmasLife was definitely an improvement if anything, the idents themselves were still dull but at least it captured the essence of Christmas, being temporary and not permanent like the 2002 UK Gold idents.

BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Argyess - 04-11-2021

The Christmas ident situation is a bit of a weird one this year.

If they HAVE already filmed it, it'll no doubt be in the new style. But if the new non-Christmas ones aren't ready to be launched on Jan 1st, we'll then have the unusual situation of the new style over Christmas, then back to the old style in January, only for the new style to be adopted later in 2022.......

My head hurts!

A little odd and unfortunate, but bear in mind the 2019 and 2020 Christmas idents weren't connected to the main set at all - they were their own thing.

2017 and 2018 were only tangentially connected to the fuzzy theme of "Oneness" as well.

Further back in time to the 90s and earlier, the Christmas idents were rarely connected to the globe.

There's no reason Christmas idents in the new style couldn't exist in their own little festive bubble, even if that wasn't the original intention.

Great article around the accessibility of the rebrand.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I've only just noticed - is it me or is the background gradient constantly changing?

Yeah, the 1991-1996 idents all used the 1 numeral instead, and the first couple of balloon era ident sets were circular, but not actually the globe (later ones did use the balloon though). Even in the 70s and 80s though, something else would be on the mirror instead of a globe, and later (in both the stripy and COW eras), the wordmark would be used. 1982 and 1984 used neither the globe nor the usual wordmark.

Yeah it's a subtle light movement - better than the previous which really did feel like a bad PowerPoint slide.

Did that change with the rebrand or has it changed since?

I noticed it from day 1 of it.

It's been there since day one of the changes. There is subtle animation movement in all of the backgrounds. And the text layout is very slightly different depending on whether the programme title is 1, 2 or 3 lines in length.

Don’t want to be too rude but it really isn’t. It’s very poorly written and doesn’t give an awful lot of insight.

The colour blindness for example. Here’s why it’s important, here’s the BBC Two ident. No explanation as to how the two are linked.

“The BBC has an icon set that was designed by the UX team and Dalton Maag, as part of the work on the typeface, BBC Reith. These follow established conventions where possible and sit comfortably as part of the brand family.”

“ one thing that is really important is that understanding where you are on the estate of any brand or sub-brands, there is never the dependence on a single element in terms of navigation.”

What do these things even mean?

I think that was more to do with colour association. Tricky to gleam how effective it is from an accessibility point of view, but it's encouraging to see them take it seriously. Yes, it's a must, but good to see it embedded into the system rather than an add-on.

Good attention to detail too, even down to being inconsistent with the branding.

Trailer tonight just before MasterChef using the new Radio 1 logo. Think this is the first time I've seen it.
