• What are the restrictions on FTA broadcasters elsewhere in Europe? Are others more restrictive than the BBC like not being able to show certain sport live like I think I read happened in 2018?

 • What was Eurosport's coverage of prevoius Olympics that I have seen mentioned like? Was it just the best of the action on Eurosport 1 or was it more expansive online etc.?

Thanks in advance to those who know!

France Télévisions is using France 2 and France 3, but not at the same time, so for example France 2 has their lunchtime block of news, France 3 takes over.

France Télévisions actually has full rights of the games. France 2/France 3 are carrying the main program and France 4 is showing team sports all day long.

At some point overnight there's even three simultaneous program, with France 3 showing the full swimming or track and field session while France 2 has the main program (occasionally showing swimming when something major happens).

France.tv online has all the events streamed live without commentary.

It's going to be different for Beijing 2022 and Paris 2024 since France Télévision is goign to start sub-licensing the rights from Discovery (I predict a huge backlash if the FTA coverage is reduced to BBC levels)

There's at least one other NBC studio on site at the Hilton, using Sky personnel I believe, but there are also a number of affiliate positions. Looking at the Instagram "places" feed for the hotel and amongst all the tourist selfies there are pictures of various setups.

Thanks for the info. I managed to find some of NBC's primetime coverage and they are indeed in the same location as the Today show, with a bit of added AR.

Returning to this... A version of the world feed opening titles with the OBS wordmark in the final frames has recently surfaced. It appeared on last night's TVP Wiadomości during a report about TVP Sport's olympic coverage. This confirms that they are two different versions of the world feed titles: one with the OBS wordmark (mostly for use in the world feed signals) and another without it (as shown by Lieuwe , for use by rights holders broadcasters). Both are exactly the same, only the OBS wordmark fades in during the final frames of the main world feed titles.

Here's a picture of it...

RTÉ2 in Ireland is using the clean feed of those titles but they have the RTÉ Sport logo with the Olympics logo beside it along with the name programme located on the bottom of the OBS titles.

RTÉ's main colours for their olympic studio presentation this year is red, blue & black. They are based in Studio 5 in Dublin & they also have a basic RTÉ Sport OB setup based in Toyko. The set in Studio 5 looks really nice. However I can't see a picture of the Studio 5 set right now. I may have to post it later.

Presenting duties for RTÉ's Olympics coverage is as follows

Peter Collins & Darragh Maloney are doing presenting duties from RTÉ in Dublin.

Clare McNamara, David Gillick & Paul O'Flynn are based in Tokyo.

Has anyone else felt like it's difficult to navigate/catch-up on the coverage?

I'm thinking back to 2012 and the innovations then such as waymarkers embedded in the live and catch-up streams for key points and changes in sport.

Example here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/internet/entries/4f5d7c76-e6a7-3324-b587-21bd3d159d6f

While I know that there isn't the same level of funding behind these games as previously, it's just frustrating more than anything when the BBC coverage is being dumped on iPlayer in 4 hour blocks.

Is there a schedule anywhere for the BBC Red Button highlights in the afternoon and evening? They appear to be updating the EPG and online schedule as they show things, which isn't very helpful if you're looking out for something in particular. Even just what's on next would be useful.

Just goes to show the BBC didn't get the best deal it could for a broadcaster in it's position.

Yes, that's a huge issue I have with the Eurosport coverage - it's a nightmare to navigate compared to how the BBC have done it previously. Credit though that the feeds seem to have held up and remained stable - not seen any reports of buffering etc. So frustrating though they've not the same level of coverage across all their apps.

Agree the four hour blocks are not useful on the iPlayer or if recording the red button. At least update the EPG with an estimated schedule within that block.

They literally seem to be scheduling it on the fly. You'd think they could at least put things up in hour/half-hour blocks by early afternoon and then adjust the timings as required.

On the subject of weather one thing to note in the announcement of Brisbane 2032 is that the games will be held in July, with the IOC now insisting on a July or August time frame. Sydney 2000 was held in September while the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and 2018 were in March.

I'm hoping it'll be subject to change as a spring/autumn date makes more sense with Australia's confusing seasons.

Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - XIII - 25-07-2021

Brisbane in July or August isn’t too bad weather wise, It’s Winter there but it’s the equivalent to Spring weather here.

I remember going to Sydney a decade ago and finding it weird seeing people wear coats in what is fairly mild weather in June

BBC Olympics coverage misses events after loss of TV rights

Quote:The BBC has received a large number of complaints about the lack of live Tokyo Olympics coverage on its channels, after viewers failed to realise that the International Olympic Committee had sold the majority of UK television rights to pay-TV company Discovery.

During the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, the BBC was able to offer dozens of free livestreams of different sports, revolutionising the way British viewers watched the games and providing much needed publicity to niche events that would not normally have enjoyed their moment in the public eye.

The extra streams are much missed from the BBC, I must say. Do you think there's any hope of a reversal once the Discovery deal expires, or are they gone for good?

Particularly as Eurosport 3-9 are so poor and limited in scope.

If they were at least multi event streams it may have helped make up for the reduced BBC coverage, but most of the channels are of events which aren't even of much interest in the UK.

Nothing is forever. The IOC is now connected with Discovery through the Olympic Channel but nothing stopping another provider taking responsibility for that in a new rights deal.

I suspect the rights for 2026-2032 will go out to tender relatively soon (this deal for 2018-24 was awarded back in 2015). They might panic as the Premier League did and perhaps offer an extension on the same terms but I suspect their hope is that by taking primary rights away from the PSBs of Europe they'll concentrate their funds on a significantly improved offer this time around.
