They already have. Classic Emmerdale is on ITV3 and they starred with the first episode years back.

Read my post properly.

Wow, yes sir.

Firstly I did read your post properly.

ITV3 broadcast Emmerdale Farm from the very first episode starting in 1999 which was renamed as Emmerdale in the 90s when it started to focus more on the village rather than the said Farm.

Same with all the "Classic" episodes of shows currently on (EastEnders, Coronation Street, Holly City, Casualty et al) they started with the very first episode and have worked their way through them. The reason ITV3 get through episodes quickly is there are usually ten episodes broadcast a week rather than the original 2, 3, 4 or 5 when broadcast.

ITV3 did not show any episodes of the show when it was "Emmerdale Farm". They started from the first episode after they dropped the "Farm" from the name (which was 1989, not 1999 as you claim... unless you're trying to say ITV3 started showing them in 1999, which would be amazing seeing as ITV3 didn't even exist until 2004- and they didn't start showing Emmerdale until 2018)- which was 17 years into the show's run. What I said I would like to see on ITV3 are those 1972-1989 editions which they haven't shown.

And neither did the repeats of Coronation Street on ITV3 start from the very first episode either despite your claims, or indeed anywhere close to the first episode., they started from January 1986- which was over 25 years into the show's run. Nor did the current Drama run of Casualty, which began in 1995- 9 years into the show's run (in fact I don't think there's ever been a repeat run of Casualty all the way through right from the start).

It doesn't seem like you watch the repeats of these shows or know that much about the shows in general.

In fact, they can't air Corrie from the start, aren't some episodes lost? That's why Granada Plus back in the 90s started their run from the 1970s. Emmerdale I think should be intact, they probably just thought people would be more interested in the 90s episodes than the 70s ones.

Nope, Corrie is pretty unique from that era in that all but one episode still exists. There's a single episode from 1972 missing, and it seems that it went missing by accident not long after broadcast rather than intentionally wiped, seeing as they filmed several minutes of bridging footage to attatch to the following episode to fill the gap for international audiences:

Enough with the bitchy comments please. If you haven't got anything useful to say, don't say it at all.

Thank you.

Emmerdale Farm is available on DVD - at least some of it is - so people have that option if they want to see the very early episodes. Sky Soap did show Emmerdale Farm in full in the 1990s, then Granada Plus started showing it at the same point ITV3 did when it became Emmerdale.

I believe the reason Granada Plus started Corrie at April 1976 was because it was the start of the Bill Podmore 'golden era' of the show. Even though 1960s and early 70s Corrie was very good I think it is generally considered that 1976 was the start of the truly classic era for the show.

1976 was also chosen because a number of the current cast at the time (1996) were in the 1976 episodes, people like Rita, Ken, Betty, Emily, Deirdre, Mavis, Gail and Alf. And most of the well known classic characters like Ena, Stan and Hilda, Bet Lynch and Annie Walker were still in the show along with Elsie returning in the first classic episode after 2 and a half years away.

When did Corrie go colour - suspect there was a reluctance to air hundreds of black and white episodes.

And back to the thoughts on 20 year old episodes feeling pretty modern. Wonder if that's an age thing - to me they certainly do with only really smart phone and social media type references being the stand out difference once you get to the mid-noughties anyway. But suspect people in their 40s watching episodes from the 70s in the 90s probably felt similar too.

Only around the first 18 months or so of it though!

And Sky Soap didn't quite show the whole lot, the channel closed down when they got to around July/August 1988, so the last 15 months or so weren't shown. Interestingly it ran in parallell with the Granada Plus run for around a year- would be interesting to know what would have happened when they reached November 1989 had Sky Soap not closed down- would they have continued with episodes Granada Plus had shown only around 18 months earlier, gone back to the start or stopped showing it entirely? Sadly I never had access to Sky Soap, so it's not like I ever had a chance to see any of those repeats anyway.

The fact that the show wasn't year round between 1975 and 1985, and some years (1976 and 79 in particular) were particularly short on episodes would see a repeat run get through the Emmerdale Farm years quite quickly if they were shown. If ITV3 had started at the beginning, we'd already have got through the "Farm" era and be into the early 90s.

STV put old episodes of Take The High Road on STV Player, putting a new batch of episodes out every week, so it would be good if similar could be done with Emmerdale Farm and early episodes of Corrie on either the ITV Hub or Britbox.

October 1969 (though the first 4 colour episodes weren't broadcast that way, possibly as an internal test to check it all worked and looked right on screen) though there was also November 1970-February 71 as a result of the infamous "colour strike" as well.

Tyrone talking about wanting a satnav in today's ITV3 episode, says they cost 3 grand... whereas these days they're thrown into even a 40 quid smartphone.

I think its to do with how TV changed between the 70s and late 90s/early 2000s. Watching 1970s Corrie in the late 90s the episodes seemed ancient but the current ITV3 episodes whilst old don't seem ancient like the 70s episodes do.

I'm surprised they are so slow releasing Emmerdale Farm on DVD. Didn't the first one get released in 2007 or something and they have only released 18 months worth.

Coronation Street - James2001 - 19-01-2022

The last one was released in 2015, so it's possible they might not release any more.

At one time they were also going to release every suriving episode of Crossroads, but they only got as far as 1979 (though that was still 20 volumes of it admittedly- still don't think it was even a third of the surviving episodes though considering the low survival rate until around 1976).

I know there was a lengthy period where Thames were several months behind the rest of the country with Crossroads, and I wonder if that's partly why survival is so poor- maybe ATV sent Thames the tapes but weren't bothered about having them back? Though as I said before ATV's record at archiving is poor in general, even up until the end- most Bob Monkhouse Family Fortunes are missing for example, his final series (which was the only one made by Central- the previous series was mostly shown by Central, but had been made by ATV in 1981, so presumably the rights stayed with their archive) is the only one that exists in full.

Debbie’s hotel bar got another outing tonight, I think it appears every week.

It's clearly the only hotel in the area and the only place anyone holds meetings or functions now.

But at least more believable as a function venue than the Rovers!
