A few years ago I'd agree, but BBC News has got to the point where the only things left are big name programmes that will get criticism for axing. Of those, Newsnight is surely one of the most likely. It may be better quality than it was a few years ago, but I'm not aware of its viewing figures improving and its still going to be more costly than its radio equivalents, even after losing most of its unique correspondents. Plus its loss would only really be felt by the politicians, journalists and politicos who are fashionable to ignore - there wouldn't be some popular outcry.
A new simulcast programme earlier in the evening would be cheaper and give BBC Two more flexibility in their late night schedule. As for the name, I'm not really sure that the Newsnight brand is actually that strong - to many people it mainly references a programme that no longer exists (Paxman) or the various scandals that Newsnight has been involved in the last decade. Plus you couldn't have a live show on BBC World News with a time specific name.

In some ways it is good for people to go who are only in it for the money. It allows a new generation who still have spirit to flourish. Will be interesting to see these two in radio format....
In terms of Newsnight, I don't really see the point of it. Most of the time it is just repeating what News has already done. If it is to continue, it needs to be integrated with news at 10, perhaps an extended on BBC 2 after the main bulletin on 1.

I don't think integrating the BBC News at Ten with Newsnight would really work. They're two very different programmes with different editorial teams and slants, the latter programme being more analysis led.
Without turning this into a fantasy schedule thread, I'd much rather the BBC News at Ten (and indeed Six) was better integrated with the News channel and see the return of the days of the Ten O'Clock News hour, but with the main Ten presenter staying on to backfill the remaining NC half hour. That surely makes more sense.

Surely the BBC now has to be very concerned (if not alarmed) about the sheer number of high-profile talent who've decided to leave the corporation over the past few years? It seems like there's been a steady procession of announcements every few months over the last few years about someone (or indeed in this case, multiple people) deciding to depart the corporation - often to join Global/LBC.
Yes, every network/organisation inevitably loses talent from time to time as they leave to pursue better/new opportunities. Yes, it's no surprise that the number/frequency of on-air talent departures has increased as a result of the corporation having to disclose their salaries and effectively giving a 'cheat sheet' to commercial rivals about how much they need to offer to poach the likes of Sopel and Maitlis. However, both of those factors don't entirely explain why the BBC is seemingly unable to convince high-profile talent to stay and if there aren't serious questions/soul searching being done about why that's become the case, the procession of departures will simply continue.
As many others have already said, the departures of Sopel and Maitlis are massive losses for the BBC - especially considering the former was viewed as one of the front runners for the Political Editor role while the latter conducted one of the most talked-about interviews of recent times. The fact that they're joining Global/LBC to (seemingly) launch a rival podcast to Newscast only makes things even worse for the BBC.

Therefore if you're already on a relatively high salary and are made a similar or higher offer elsewhere you're likely to take it, rather than risk staying and facing a (potentially further) pay cut.

Oof. Actually, there's been no mention of money. In saying that, it shows that you assume this is a financial decision.
I don't doubt that they're on more cash, but you can't blame them. None of us are charities, and while many of us do our jobs for less than we could/should for other reasons, you can't bemoan people who have spent years at a particular organisations seeking new chapters elsewhere for more cash.
It's a bit of a personal comment.

As I said elsewhere, I think that in addition to salary concerns you also have the fact that BBC journalists face a higher level of both online and, increasingly, offline harassment than those at other organisations, as well as frequent, often unfounded, criticism from the press and government. You are also fairly restricted in what you are allowed to publicly say if you are a BBC journalist. If you are getting an offer with better pay, less stress and more freedom - it's sort of a no brainer. The additional prestige that comes from being BBC simply no longer outweighs other concerns.
There is also definitely an element of 'sinking ship' about it all. The future of the BBC is somewhat in doubt for the first time ever and BBC News is a crumbling empire - which will contrast heavily with the confident, expanding organisation that many of these leavers joined in the late-90s/early-00s. If somebody is giving you a firm offer now, you don't want to turn it down and then be up against several other high-profile BBC broadcasters in the same boat in a few years time.

There's a sense of irony that Jon's gone from previously presenting a show called Global to presenting on Global.
He was in a countdown into Live with Lucy Hockings earlier today.
Absolutely gutted for Newsnight to be losing Emily, but she ticked every box in her career there. BBC LDN, News Channel, 1, 6, 10, Breakfast. Elections and first woman to become lead anchor of Newsnight and of course Americast. She also bagged some of the biggest interviews during her tenure at The BBC - Trump and Prince Andrew are just two...where else would she go?
But as so many have already mentioned, two huge losses for The BBC following an already huge loss of long serving talent over the last 24 months.
I'll be tuning in for sure.

Global have always wanted to emulate their brands as alternatives to the BBC national stations, so LBC poaching premium BBC talent is nothing new.
However I don't think Ferrari is going anywhere unless he wants to, they have the right balance on daytime at the moment. Personally I'd give Sopel a gig on LBC News during the week to bolster their already credible line-up in addition to a show with Maitlis on LBC at the weekend.

I’d argue this is probably one of the many reasons why such good talent are leaving the BBC. James himself used to be on Newsnight many moons ago before leaving the corporation. I’d echo his point that the BBC has got to be careful not to let too much talent leave the corporation. Losing Marr to Global/LBC was big, now Maitlis and Sopel, that’ll be a huge loss.
People leaving the BBC to the commercial sector is nothing new, but this has really come out of the blue today.

I've worked with her and her persona and sense of humour she exhibits on Americast is how she is, but it's not something she's able to on TV. I'll definately be trying the podcast, although I wonder if it'll suffer from not being as focused as Americast
