Channel 4 - Brekkie - 01-04-2021 See C4 are now branding Thursdays as the #WeekendWarmUp, adding comedy Frank of Ireland in a couple of weeks. Hmm. If its anything like Father Ted it should be worth a look. Channel 4 - DavidWhitfield - 06-04-2021 I hope this isn't an inappropriate place to note this information, but it's very sad to see the news of Paul Ritter's passing from a brain tumour this morning. I didn't feel it required a specific news thread but as he was arguably best known for starring in Chernobyl and Channel 4's Friday Night Dinner, this seemed the most appropriate home for the update. A real shock as he was only 54. Utterly terrific as the anarchic father, Martin, in Friday Night Dinner. Incredibly sad news. Thoughts with his loved ones. Channel 4 - XIII - 06-04-2021 I imagine Channel 4 will repeat an episode as a tribute next week. I do wonder if Robert Popper will want to continue the series without Paul Ritter as it would change the dynamic of the series if it’s just Jackie and the two boys. Channel 4 - Brekkie - 06-04-2021 Sad news. I believe a retrospective was due to air this Spring to mark it's 10th anniversary, which may have been filmed, although it had been confirmed no new episodes were planned. Friday Night Dinner for me is probably the best sitcom of the last decade, and indeed possible the only one other than Mrs Browns' Boys to span the decade aswell. I do wonder if Robert Popper will want to continue the series without Paul Ritter as it would change the dynamic of the series if it’s just Jackie and the two boys. If it were to continue, I'd imagine a serious episode in tribute to his character. Basically, it'll be like that one episode of 8 Simple Rules which was shown after John Ritter, who played Paul Hennessey, where his wife Cate and his kids find out that their dad and husband is gone and they have to cope with him being gone. I can imagine Friday Night Dinner doing an episode where the remaining characters find out about Martin's passing and having to cope with it. That would completely change the usual comedic style of the show for something serious but also what would be a fitting farewell to Paul and his character. Channel 4 - DavidWhitfield - 06-04-2021 For me, the format of the programme revolves around the relationship between the main four characters - the long-suffering mother, the irreverent father, and the two cheeky but lovable sons and the way they interact with each other. Remove one element and the whole dynamic changes and it falls apart. I may well be proven wrong, but I cannot imagine the show continuing without Ritter. Channel 4 - Brekkie - 06-04-2021 The show pretty much wrapped everything up last year and ended on a high, with it being said by most involved there would be no further episodes. There is no reason for it to continue. Channel 4 - iloveTV1 - 06-04-2021 Rest In Peace Paul. This is very sad news. I'm sure they said a seventh series was possible but it is now most definitely out of the question. It's a shame as there could've maybe been a special or two over years to come. It would've been great to see Martin as a grandad. That retrospective is going to be a poignant watch now (apparently it has been filmed and Ritter is in it). Channel 4 - Rory - 06-04-2021 Such sad news, I didn’t expect it at all Yes, the retrospective will certainly be a sad watch in light of it. RIP Paul.
Channel 4 - iloveTV1 - 06-04-2021 Anniversary special will also be a tribute to Paul. https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/friday-night-dinner-anniversary-robert-popper-tribute/ Channel 4 - digiperson - 06-04-2021 A ‘Celebrating Paul Ritter’ section has been added to the Freeview Play channel 100, featuring Friday Night Dinner, No Offence and some STV programmes. Channel 4 - paul_hadley - 06-04-2021 Very sad news. The final series wrapped things up quite well so I can’t see them bringing the show back without him, and they probably shouldn’t. Channel 4 - ConorM98 - 06-04-2021 Also it would be great if everyone would donate to the Old Vic Impact Fund as it's what Paul's family would've wanted. RIP Paul. https://www.oldvictheatre.com/support-us/donate Channel 4 - paul_hadley - 06-04-2021 Without speculating too much I wonder if they’ve known about this for a while which explains why FND had a wrap-up episode? |
