Despite the Olympics finishing a few months back, Android TV and Fire TV users are still stuck with 720p, despite being 1080p before the games.

AppleTV

The old app still works tonight (at time of writing) but the new App is available to download from the App Store, but is currently geolocked for UK audiences.

Discovery + - London Lite - 10-12-2021

The new app is now on Android TV and Fire TV devices.

Eurosport 1 and 2 are now back in FHD at 50fps.

Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet and Quest are back in FHD at 25fps.

No change to the SD only channels.

A couple of things that stick out, there's a new sports section, which includes extra streams (I haven't tested the resolution of those) as well as catch-up of other Eurosport programmes.

There's also a tv guide for all of the linear channels.

The other is since they moved to the new app, you can't sign-in to the apps via the website, it's now all manual sign-in for the tv apps which is slightly inconvenient.

The website version of Discovery+ no longer allows you to manually change your resolution, but it appears to be up to 1080p still.

The new iOS app looks like it’ll be much better than the old one though it appears to have wiped my viewing history which is a massive pain.

I guess it's a bit early for them to be testing streams for the Winter Olympics, as they are about 7 weeks away.

Still some teething problems, selecting live programming from the EPG fails occasionally. Am surprised that whole stages of the TDF are rewatchable still, one lasting over 7 hours.

Discovery + - London Lite - 11-12-2021

Just updated my Android phone with the new app and the layout is a lot nicer and easier to find content.

Poked a new version out in the last 24hrs to tvOS devices.

Not sure if anyone else if having the same issue, but a few times, on both Fire Stick and Android app, after a fortnight or so since the last time, I turn it on to find out I'm logged out and have to start the sign in process from scratch. It's a little annoying because no other app logs out (I'm sure iPlayer on my Fire Stick has been logged in without issue for three years for example) and the process of logging in on Fire Stick is a little cumbersome with the need to type out the e-mail and password fully.

It doesn't help that the new app has lost the functionality to sign in via a browser for the TV apps.

Coming to BTTV in connection with the JV announcement today.

I for one like the sound of a JV between BT and Discovery taking Sport into this proposed 50/50 joint venture. They will be able to leverage the content into a bigger group having Eurosport and BT Sport under the same roof.

Will be interesting to see if anything changes outside the UK with regards to channels or content. But with lack of info on the deal time will tell. Remember nothing is done or finished yet, let's wait and see.

It is nice to see Discovery Group making deals considering the little Warner thing also happening.

We are probably going to see consolidation over the next 5 years, survival of the fittest

Discovery+ are launching a subscription with ads for the entertainment package which is £1 cheaper, but judging by a text we've just had through from Vodafone you won't actually be able to pay for an ad free version of entertainment on its own - so the only two options will be entertainment with ads or entertainment + sport with no ads.

In effect a £2 price rise for Entertainment only users who want to have ad-free content.
