Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - thebigdog2020 - 24-07-2021 Could the UK Government not get involved with the TV rights situation as it is a listed event in the UK? Basically could they not say full rights has to go to BBC, ITV, Channel 4 or Channel 5 rather than what we are left with now with basically 2 streams after the last few summer games on the BBC. There wasn't a big campaign that the Olympics have a new destination for everything. The only time is when people go onto social media and find out for themselves. I dunno, I see the Discovery+ adverts every time I go on social media. They make a point of being the home of the Olympics. Obviously it's not in the BBC's interest to mention any of this. Volleyball commentary is distorted though. Aah I was wondering why there was no commentary on the cycling on the 4K channel, unless the channel is set up multi lingual audio tracks maybe ? According to this article, the BBC's plan was always to have a virtual set even if they'd been presenting from Tokyo. It's because the time difference would have meant a real background would have been dark most of the time, Daybreak-style. Would the Right holder be happy with this ? I think not ….. the hassle of UK only and then the loss of income from not splitting tv radio and digital rights So who would the recipient of the UK rights ? one broadcaster …how are they going to afford it ? Note that it is mostly the BBC which seeks these rights not the other PSB A consortium of broadcasters … may be ? But again do all want all rights - include Sky /COBA as well Or the government …… that would be interesting …. As the EBU lost the rights ..the BBC has got a deal better than the basic IOC/OBS free to air … Some other rights holder organisations would not have a FTA requirement … And thus uk legislation would mean the event would not be covered because the rights were not available, Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Brekkie - 24-07-2021 thebigdog2020 post_id=30459 time= user_id=1596 Wrote:Could the UK Government not get involved with the TV rights situation as it is a listed event in the UK? If it had been the World Cup with them leasing back the England and home nation games and the final it would probably attract a lot of comment, but for me this is much worse. Of course the rights being sold nationwide meant the BBC could only bit as part of the EBU bid, which lost out. The previous cycle (2013-2020) saw the IOC award the rights to the bigger countries individually. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - Brekkie - 24-07-2021 Not sure on the m/s graphic on the swimming - adds very little for the casual viewer and actually distracts from the race, which is all that matters. Speed only matters when a world record, or perhaps qualifying time, is being targetted and the line across the pool is a much better way of illustrating that. Tokyo Olympics 2020 on BBC and Eurosport - James2001 - 24-07-2021 I can't believe what a mess Eurosport are making, I'd really have expected better with all their resources and experience, especially as they've had an extra year to prepare. Even their extra channels are a mess, each channel restricted to a particular sport with several key sports omitted and often not showing live even when there is something to show. Their Winter Olympic coverage in 2018 wasn't this bad! The BBC seem to be struggling as well though with only two feeds and working out what to put on them. The BBC's studio in the Tokyo IBC was shown in a video earlier in the thread and indeed it was windowless. They're using it as office space now instead, enabling the desks to be distanced more. On weekdays it’s scheduled for 12.00, in the middle of the evening action. Would of been better perhaps to have News at One on BBC2 at 1.00 as normal with a Regional bulletin on BBC1 following the live coverage - eg. 2.50-3.00. Then live coverage can run on BBC1 uninterrupted. Today I suspect they would of gone straight from the football to the swimming, but with a bulletin at 1.40 it felt they filling up to it and then they only had 15 mins on BBC2, only time for a bit more filler. As you say though moving it to BBC2 then running a short regional bulletin just before 3pm on BBC1 would make far more sense. Similarly the 15 minute move to BBC2 could probably be avoided with a short bulletin just interupting coverage instead, especially as the live action seems to be finished for the day. Seems that Hazel is doing the full 9am-3pm shift today on her own. Whether Gabby will only come in when the athletics starts remains to be seen - would probably have made more sense for her to cover the football today. Nice though to see Hazel get effectively the prime live shift - the BBC are lucky to have Gabby and Clare as well, and previously Sue, but for me Hazel has always had the edge. |
