Channel 4 - Inspector Sands - 02-01-2022

Yes Sky has a change freeze over the Christmas period. As you say a lot of places do too, I suspect Channel 4 will too but even if not they certainly wouldn't want to risk it after recent events

So yeah, you know that “Lindsey” continuity announcer we hear on BBC One and Two mostly? Well, there have been occasions that I’ve heard her two on Channel 4 - and tonight was certainly one of them. Out of curiosity, how come? Does she have two contracts running at the same time?

Without going too into it, Announcers tend to be freelance. So it's a case of whoever needs them - some channels might be funny about direct competition (however it's a minimal issue nowadays)

Gary Terzza who's voice was very well known for Channel 4, also announced on Granada Plus.

I always found it strange hearing a voice I so associate with C4, announcing Classic Coronation St on Plus.

Channel 4 - Rick - 04-01-2022

The ITV CA that there were a lot of posts about for talking too quickly and mispronouncing words has been doing promos for Channel 5 and My5.

Channel 4 - Kunst - 04-01-2022

Here in Italy it seems like a completely different situation.

Voiceovers on promos are mostly dubbers, and they're also obliged to use the same "clean" standard Italian accent, which in reality almost no one (sadly) uses, even newsreaders use a kind of (generally Roman or Milanese, depending on where they're based from) accent.

Shortly, regional accents or mispronunciations are a no-no with voiceovers, unless for comedy effects.

I know Germany is kind of similar too, France obviously concentrate its energy on Paris, etc.

While, as a non-English speaker, I sometimes struggle with some ITV2 or E4 voices!

I think here in the UK there was an emphasis on the RP accent/'BBC English' but gradually in the past 25-30 years that has changed. The demand is for voiceovers/announcers with regional and diverse accents to reflect the general viewing public across the country. Channel 4 have been the leaders on this for years, and I think BBC One in their continuity, recently have taken this direction more prominently.

Channel 4 - Larry the Loafer - 08-01-2022

Isn't one of the ITV CA's doing the voiceover for a boiler insurance advert?

Yes he is....its Jason Milligan
(But this thread is for Channel 4, so I'll refrain from derailing the topic further)

What gets me though is that certain accents seem to be more in favour than others. We’re quite used to hearing Scottish, Mancunian and London accents in continuity, but if broadcasters really want to be representative of the whole country, where are the Cornish, Bristolian, Brummy or Liverpudlian accents? Or are they just not considered fashionable enough?

I think maybe you're not watching enough channels, UKTV channels (i.e. W, alibi) has Brummie and Scouse accents. They're definitely out there

You’re probably right- maybe I don’t watch them enough to have noticed. But I still maintain that such accents certainly aren’t as prominent in presentation as others which are much more in favour.

Channel 4 - Kunst - 09-01-2022

Some accents are becoming less distinctive and somehow merging or becoming less strong, that's the case for northern English accents, which are becoming "generic northern" (a mixture of Leeds and Manchester) in urban areas, among educated people.
Similar to how Estuary English has been taking over the south-east

The West Country, in the same vein, has been losing some typical features, stigmatized features, especially Bristol, especially when it comes to rhoticity.
Similar story for the West Midlands, to an extent

So probably showing the typical accents of each area, isn't going to reflect the reality of 2022, I believe, unless for some "comic" effects

Channel 4 - UploadTV - 23-01-2022

E4 is to begin airing the Australian version of Big Brother soon. Could this be Channel 4 testing the waters on a revival of the UK version.

Channel 4 - Dogorilla - 23-01-2022

With all these Australian versions of shows airing on E4 I'm hoping they'll pick up Taskmaster New Zealand.
