Roger Darthwell post_id=28369 time= user_id=1160 Wrote:Thing is, a modern version/evolution of Gill Sans already exists, it's called Gill Sans Nova and it's been created by designer George Ryan (NOT Eric Gill BTW) https://www.monotype.com/fonts/gill-sans-nova

Just to pick up on this. Gill Sans Nova is a new font based on Eric Gill’s typeface Gill Sans. Very little of the typeface has been redesigned (only the numeral 1 has had the top flag added), whilst the font has been updated to use more modern typography features and have additional weights developed. (I know this, having undertaken a piece of work for my own employer to assist in deciding whether or not to move from Gill Sans to Gill Sans Nova for our printed documents.)

When it comes to on-screen graphic design (rather than document typography), Gill Sans Nova has exceedingly little difference to Gill Sans and it most certainly doesn’t get around the two big non-design barriers to the use of Gill Sans, those of font licensing fees and of Eric Gill’s past.

The BBC had better get the chisel and hammer out to remove his sculptures then!

I don't think there are licensing fees for the logotype, given it's based on Gill Sans but is actually slightly redrawn.

I honestly do not see CBBC and CBeebies having changes beyond the actual blocks part ?

I swear , in the 1990s-2000s at least , their bugs had slightly different BBC blocks so they might do this

I should have said ‘perceived barriers’, then! Perhaps it’s low down the list, but I do wonder if the ‘extra-curricular’ activities of Gill has some bearing on this decision. The statue on the building is slightly different.

And I wasn’t trying to suggest that the blocks logo had licensing costs associated with it. I’m still yet to be convinced by the suggestion that the master brand had to change as part of the switch to Reith, and I don’t much like the new logo, although I’m willing to be impressed by the implementation.

The intention of my post was to suggest to Mr Darthwell that Gill Sans Nova is neither here nor there when it comes to the BBC’s decision to produce their own in-house font.

Just did a survey for Swagbucks that briefly showed the new BBC logo, as well as a few logos for services. If I'd realised straightaway what it was I would have got a screenshot but it was too quick for me and wouldn't let me go back Sad

However, I briefly saw the BBC Two logo in the new font, which formed into one of the curve idents, so can we take that as confirmation the Curve idents are staying?

Agreed, the snippets of presentation we've seen, such as the new 'trending now' trailer, are looking really good and much better than anything we've seen from the BBC in a while (other than really the BBC Two idents). It's just such a shame about the logo. It'd be like if the 1997 relaunch was exactly the same except you got Oneness instead of the Balloons - everything is looking great, except that steaming turd in the middle.

In fact, logos are something that they've been screwing up for the whole Reith rollout. The current BBC Sport and BBC News graphics are all very nice - with BBC News' being far greater than most of their previous attempts - but the logos have always been their weakness.

From what we know they'll just have an updated logo but keep the curves thankfully.

Obviously BBC1 needs a new look but even in it's downgraded status BBC4 could do with new idents and presentation as well. CBeebies can probably get away with just updating the blocks, whilst thinking about it the new look CBBC and BBC3 presentation from a few years back already has elements we've seen in the glimpses so far.

If they choose to keep those things on bbc one with the new logo it would be a wasted opportunity. I’d be flabbergasted if they did not launch something brand new for one.

Do you have a screenshot of it? Despite this, i believe BBC Two will keep some selection of the original curve idents with additional new set of idents when the BBC changes its logo, like when BBC changes its corporate logo in 1997 but many original set of 90s "2" on BBC Two were kept until 2001.

New BBC Logo - Kunst - 17-07-2021

Why should BBC Two change?

The current look is expensive and still looks excellent

I appreciate your suggestion, but if the ''extra-curricular'' activities of Eric Gill himself had any bearing on this decision, I would like to kindly point out that Gill's crimes were exposed back in 1989, when Fiona MacCarthy's biography of Gill was published, 8 full years before Gill Sans was adopted as the BBC's font. So if in 1997 the BBC and Lambie-Nairn had no problems adopting the font despite the appalling crimes of it's creator, then why remove it now because of that? As for the licensing costs of the logo itself, I would like to remind everybody that when BBC News was reithed back in 2019, the BBC assured that the iconic logo would be left unchanged, because they said that the logo itself is trademarked and any ''licensing font issues'' do not apply to it, they also said that the letters BBC inside of the logo were considered shapes rather than text, therefore it had no licensing issues. Also there is still one thing that I still don't understand about this ''saving money on font licensing'' thing, as I have already mentioned BBC News was already reithed back in 2019, with the BBC logo itself left unchanged, now they are using the same excuse for changing the logo itself, and here I have an important question. If the BBC still kept paying font licensing for the BBC logo, why did they wait TWO full years before deciding to reithise the logo itself? If font licensing was the problem, then why the BBC did not change it's logo back in 2019 alongside BBC News? Why doing it now? I mean for real, has the BBC really kept paying loads and loads of money for licensing only because of the BBC logo despite the reithisation 2 years ago? As I said many times before this makes no sense whatsoever! My sincere apologies if anyone was offended

The idents are nice. The surrounding package is lacking.

Sadly not, but I agree we could see some new additions to the set. The BBC Two logo was initially full screen in Teal before the Curve appeared (They used Charged Channeling for the survey)

I'm surprised they're even doing random surveys and yet no one has lived to actually take screenshots. Surprises me more it wasn't a "public interest" test to see if the public would even notice a difference (which likely, they wouldn't)
