Unless it's not possible, or the COVID restrictions are exceptionally onerous, I'd expect there to be some reporters on-site

In 2018, I think it was a mixture of John Hunt, Steve Cram and Sir Matt Pinsent. Hazel was back in the UK presenting the afternoon extended highlights then, but IIRC she was on commentary back in 2014.
Did Kat Downes not do one of the ceremonies in 2018, or am I thinking of the Commonwealth's instead

2022 Winter Olympics - Brekkie - 03-01-2022

She may have done. I remember so little about the 2018 Commonwealth Games other than the BBC hosting most of it from a beach and the closing ceremony being absolutely rubbish (so bad the Aussie broadcaster apologised to their viewers for it!). That's what happens when they take place overnight in April.

Has Graham Bell left Ski Sunday now? He did Dancing on Ice (rather unsuccessfully) last year and it seems to be billed as Chemmy Alcott and Ed Leigh this series.

She might have done, she was onsite commentating on the figure skating so it is feasible. I certainly don't think it was the same commentators on both ceremonies. Same at the Commonwealth Games with Hazel leaving early to be back for the snooker the following week.

I haven't got round to watching yesterday's yet so not sure how accurate the billing is. But the below from Graham suggests he wasn't on this week but will still be part of the show. Not sure if that is in a lesser cappacity than 2020 or earlier though.

James2001 post_id=59218 time= user_id=956 Wrote:The Eurosport linear coverage was pretty poor, certainly on the extra channels which were limited to certain sports, and aimed at continental audiences so didn't really cover sports the UK is usually interested in.
I think the extra channels were a straight rebroadcast of the OBS "MDS" feeds - half a dozen or so ready-to-broadcast channels with very little editorial input from Discovery.

There's definitely going to be a BBC technical presence in Beijing - I don't know how much commentary/reporting will be there.

Ed Leigh & Chemmy Alcott were presenting but Graham Bell was commentating yesterday so not left the show just not the co-presenter anymore by the look of it.

Peacock will stream all of the Winter Olympics for premium subscribers in the US. Although they were billed as the streaming home for the Tokyo games in reality it was a bit of a mess with most content available through NBCOlympics and only a limited number of events on Peacock, possibly down to existing deals with affiliates and cable companies. It seems this time round they're simplifying things and focusing on one location, similar to what it looks like Eurosport will be doing with Discovery+.

2022 Winter Olympics - UTVLifer - 09-01-2022

I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of trailer/titles the BBC will have for Beijing 2022, given their brilliant efforts for PyeongChang in 2018 and Tokyo 2020 last year.

2008's package wasn't bad for what it was at the time, but thank god that animation has improved and got more slick/polished since then

What exactly is wrong with the animation?

I'm not necessarily saying that anything is wrong with the animation, all I'm saying is that in the years since 2008 animation on a whole (and in BBC Olympics promos) has got cleaner and more polished.

I would respectfully say that that is the intended style of the animation. As can be seen in the rest of Jamie Hewlett's work.

What I would say about the Monkey promo is that there is absolutely no way that they would commission Damon Albarn to write something in that style now. Quite correctly, they would commission a composer who actually has roots in Chinese culture, rather than have a white British musician write in that 'Chinese-music-by-numbers' style.

That is woke-me-in-2022 talking, but I also disliked the music at the time!

My biased 2-cents as a massive Blur fan:

This was off the back of Monkey: Journey to the West, which was commissioned by Chinese opera director Chen Shi-Zheng who also write the lyrics. So it was less appropriation, more collaboration IMO.

2022 Winter Olympics - Brekkie - 10-01-2022

I don't think it'll happen but I wouldn't be against them revisiting that theme and intro style for the Winter Olympics. I also wouldn't be completely against them returning to the Ski Sunday theme for these games, effectively focusing on the event rather than location.

I see via LinkedIn that BSI (Broadcast Services International) arrived on site yesterday to prepare the BBC Sport facilities ahead of the Games.

It looks like they are doing most of the coverage (if not all) over at Salford.

In other news, an Eurosport promo focusing on their OTT coverage over at Discovery+/Eurosport Player has revealed a possible clue of the OBS graphics for Beijing 2022, which is nothing more than a recolored version of the Tokyo 2020 graphics. We will wait for further information, however:

In the ceremonies fold, the Opening Ceremony will be once again directed by Zhang Yimou, the world renowned but also often criticised and analysed wuxia film director, who directed the memorable ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympics. He said today to the media that it will be a shorter and snappier ceremony, running less than 100 minutes and featuring only 3,000 volunteers. We will see if the ceremonies live up to the critical acclaim and record-breaking audiences he achieved with the 2008 Olympics.
