I do wonder how they explain the Scotland move, although if it’s like the old series, they’ll just start a new term and not reference what has come before like they used to do, where teachers would have left and never mentioned again
I would imagine it would be nearer enough a reboot with maybe only one or two characters retuning.

I only watched it a few times but I would think it would be a complete reboot with some mentions of the past and maybe a past character or 2 returning for a few episodes but nothing over than that similar to Doctor who

Interesting as I believe the other new continuing drama we've got coming from the Beeb is one based in the nations. So they could've bought Waterloo Road back as a Scotland production but have chosen not to!

Personally, I’ll be disappointed if they don’t explain how and why “Waterloo Road School” is open again in Rochdale (we assume back in Rochdale, Greater Manchester confirmed). I can’t remember the exact storyline behind the move, but the originally Rochdale Waterloo Road closed down/was merged - so some of the teachers and pupils set up a free school (bizarrely some 200 miles away!). The easiest explanation would be that the Rochdale school was reestablished at some time after series 7 to present date, under its former name after the merge was deemed unsuccessful. I do think that’ll mean the Glasgow years have to be “forgotten” - pupils from that era can’t really be deemed as ex-Waterloo Road students (except the few that started in Rochdale but moved to Glasgow such as Katie McGlynn’s character) as those who joined the Glasgow school, never attend the Manchester based school. An academy trust idea might work (whereby Waterloo Road is now the name/organisation behind a group of schools) therefore more of the Glasgow years/pupils can be included as “wider school alumni”. What I think would be hard, is if they pretend series 8-10 never happened at all, particularly as people have watched those on iPlayer most recently and will be the freshest memories.
All of this depends how heavy they want to start afresh or build on the previous series, which will also influence returning characters etc. Pupils returning in support staff roles / some as teachers perhaps but again as pointed out, they’d need to be selective with that! Teachers are a bit easier, obviously some of the key teachers, Grantly and Tom, died during the Glasgow years and others may now be near to or already at the end of their careers! Still plenty who could return though and I imagine that’ll be down to who’s available too, assuming they even want to bring back former cast members.

Presumably it was only moved from Rochdale in the first place to fulfil some BBC Nations quota, which seems to be how most of the Scottish quotas are ticked.

So let me get this straight, the BBC is axing one of it's flagship medical dramas Holby City in order to bring back Waterloo Road, I'm sorry but this is unacceptable. Holby is one of the most important shows on tv and it's being replaced by Waterloo Road, I mean why cant it carry on by having both shows on, there's nothing wrong with that. I mean it's unacceptable, if you look on twitter and type in Holby and Waterloo Road, the reaction is disapproving, with anger and that not everyone wants Waterloo Road to come back.

Twitter isn’t the same thing as the public though, nor should programming be decided via democracy on the BBC at least.
They can’t have both because of money.
And for what it’s worth, I think it’s smart to create a new production (essentially) under a much loved brand. It’s the only way I can see this working, to be honest.

Holby isn't that important in the history of TV, it's a spin-off from Casualty after all!

If Holby is your favourite programme you’re more likely to link the two things together.

Casualty will still meet the remit for medical based drama on Saturday nights. If anything, don't be surprised if 1-2 characters from Holby City move across to keep the continuity.

If Holby City is as popular as you suggest, why has nobody been watching it?
