Did they used to switch on with video or was there a period before video was added? If the sound carrier was present without the vision carrier, domestic tellies couldn't demodulate the sound, because they used intercarrier detection locked to the vision carrier Tvam- Timeslot - James2001 - 03-06-2021 I presume they'd have run ETP-1 before cutting to Camden, but I'm not old enough to remember that sadly. ETP 1 made very few appearances on ITV beyond 1982. I think the IBA were keen to make it synonymous with C4, particularly during 82 to 86 when the C4 Tx network was being rolled out and folk needed something unique and identifable to tune their presets into. Tvam- Timeslot - Newsdog - 03-06-2021 ETP 1? A kind of testcard? Tvam- Timeslot - James2001 - 03-06-2021 Newsdog post_id=16486 time=1622745426 user_id=1461 Wrote:ETP 1? A kind of testcard?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42MCFnumW00 The video description says they think this dates from 1987 or 1988, so maybe ITV did still broadcast it occasionally this late? Sadly I'm too young to remember (and even in the era I was alive, we had Yorkshire who were from a couple of months after I was born on air all night with either Music Box or Jobfinder, so never switched off the transmitters or broadcast the test card anyway- would have had to rely on the weak signal from Bilsdale to possibly see anything like that). The ITV Morning News began a few months before all ITV regions went 24 hours, so presumably those regions who did close down opened up at 5AM for that anyway. Only to hand over to TV-am an hour later. Quote:The ITV Morning News began a few months before all ITV regions went 24 hours, so presumably those regions who did close down opened up at 5AM for that anyway. Only to hand over to TV-am an hour later. That sounds highly unlikely. The regions who were last to being on 24 hours were the smallest, they wouldn't have wanted to pay for staff to come in in the early hours for 1 hour of broadcasting Tvam- Timeslot - JK1985 - 03-06-2021 The ITN Morning News launched on Monday 15th February 1988 in a one hour slot. Those regions which had not launched 24 hours by February 1988 chose to not air the bulletin, as they knew by the end of the year they would be on air 24 hours, so it was not going to annoy ITN too much. By the autumn of 1988 only Border, Grampian, Tyne Tees, TSW and Ulster were not 24 hours, the first four went 24 hours on 2nd September by joining Granada's over night service, with Ulster Television joining in on 3rd October 1988 due to problems with unions in Belfast. Though this IBA enginnering announcements from 1985 does mention that there is still test card on ITV very early in the morning ("very little", but not none). Just that there's a lot more of it on Channel 4: https://rewind.thetvroom.com/24994/programmes/iba-engineering-announcements-partial-the-test-card-october-1985/ I seem to remember on TV Forum someone posting a Scottish television closedown from the mid-80s where Tony Currie mentioned the test card coming on at around 5:20 before TV-am as well (though the test card in question might not have been ETP-1 of course). Though as I wasn't around then I can't give any first hand accounts. Tvam- Timeslot - Markymark - 03-06-2021 ETP 1 dates from 1978. Designed and transmitted by the IBA from the transmitter sites, never the ITV companies. When C4 and S4C came along it was generated at the primary regional transmitters, but also C4 and S4C had their own genetators for daytime use Tvam- Timeslot - Neil Jones - 03-06-2021 On a related note, you can see a brief appearance of a blue IBA slide at the 6am handover in this video, from about 40 seconds in: https://youtu.be/Y1yUxUvUuJ0?t=40 Not entirely sure why there would be a blue IBA slide for TV-am as late as 1988, since as above a lot of the smaller regions didn't go 24hrs until later that year and those that were were doing their own programming until 6am anyway. Tvam- Timeslot - James2001 - 03-06-2021 Would still have been there for the regions which weren't 24 hours, I imagine. I guess if ETP-1 wasn't really broadcast on ITV after 1982 it could account for why there only seems to be a couple of off-air recordings of the ITV version out there. If it was still being shown regularly up until 1988 I'd expect there to be more recordings even if it was only seen at around 5 in the morning. There's plenty of recordings of TV-am startups and the blue IBA card after all. The ITV version does briefly appear on a TV that Grandad's watching in an episode of Only Fools and Horses (before he presses a button and changes it to TCF!), though that episode does predate both TV-am and Channel 4. Things like that are usually done because everybody knows what Test Card F looks like, as its such an iconic image. May have missed the point if ETP-1 was there. Anyway fiction gets all manner of TV "presentation" things wrong, like those in Shaun of the Dead that I posted to TV Forum full of "stand by for further information" slides. Nice, but not something we'd ever see in this country, regardless of whether we're in the middle of a zombie attack or the apocalypse.
Tvam- Timeslot - James2001 - 03-06-2021 In that episode Grandad has two TVs, one was showing TCF, one was showing ETP-1 until he changed the channel so it was showing TCF too, I think the joke is that Grandad will sit staring at the TV (or multiple TVs) even when there's nothing on. Yes, you're correct about YTV and TTTV breakfast 'shows'. They ran about 11/12 weeks or so as an experiment and had to get the Regulator's permission to do so. Tvam- Timeslot - James Martin - 04-06-2021 Ref. the LWT handover - pretty much confirms Camden Lock were putting out the IBA slide. Could the 5am morning news not have been routed through TV-AM for those regions who weren't 24 hours by that point, or would that be a legal minefield? |
