ATT's Warner Media and Discovery in merger talks - Kunst - 17-05-2021 HBO Max will likely come in UK in 2025, and HBO provides a lot of content for Atlantic , Comedy etc. That was expected even before the merger, but who knows what their next moves might be, now they want to consolidate their business. Something à la Disney (Disney killing its own channels etc., and I doubt Fox will last long, in the UK) ATT's Warner Media and Discovery in merger talks - Whataday - 17-05-2021 There's some speculation that Comcast might end up buying the combined Warner/Discovery anyway. I have a feeling it would be very hard to convince the UK and EU regulators to let that one through, not without sellign some assets. Eurosport competes with Sky in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Austria for example. Just watching Grace Randolph's coverage of it, she suggests that both AT&T and Comcast want out of the content business, and therefore AT&T's 71% of Warner/Discovery could eventually go to a spun-off NBC Universal rather than Comcast itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ_CNprYMTs ATT's Warner Media and Discovery in merger talks - JAS84 - 17-05-2021 If Comcast wants to dispose of NBC, shouldn't they change their logo, which is currently the NBC peacock? Obviously that would be the last thing they'd think about, not the first. It's a financial decision rather than anything to do with branding. It seems to be Wall Street that thinks Comcast and AT&T are better off as telecom companies without movie studios and networks. ATT's Warner Media and Discovery in merger talks - Cassia Tuna - 17-05-2021 Big news. The UK equivalent would effectively be ITV and Channel 5 merging. ATT's Warner Media and Discovery in merger talks - Rdd - 17-05-2021 Would it be though? Warner owns half of the CW, Discovery doesn’t have a terrestrial presence in the US. One of the reasons the Murdochs held on to the rump Fox Corp when they otherwise sold out to Disney was that perceived wisdom was that the FCC wouldn’t allow Disney to buy the Fox terrestrial network and keep ABC (and likewise but less importantly, put ESPN and FS1&2 under the same roof). In other words the regulator wouldn’t allow two major networks be 100% owned by one company. It is big news but more interesting for the fact that, at least as far as AT&T is concerned, it seems investors have decided that convergence between telecoms and media is dead. The NBC/Comcast demerger notion is probably coming from that angle (would be interesting to see who gets to keep Sky in that narrative, if it played out). But you can see it over this side of the water too, with BT looking at a sale of BT Sport, eir quitting sport and VMTV and Virgin Media probably going their separate ways down the line too. Sky has always been an odd company in that it was originally a pure broadcaster, crept slowly into the carriage business and then suddenly was the biggest pay-tv firm in the U.K. and Ireland. Be interesting to see if it retains the infrastructure/carriage side going forward - Now TV /Sky X may be the future in that regard - though clearly satellite is going nowhere for it yet. ATT's Warner Media and Discovery in merger talks - cityprod - 18-05-2021 What is it with TimeWarner/Warner Media and failed mergers? AOL Time Warner, and now being spun off from AT&T? It's like whoever takes it on, seems to regret it just a few years later. The original merger of Time Inc and Warner Communications and later the merger of TimeWarner and Turner was successful.
