Shameful.Well that’s a one off It sat very uneasy with me. You see large crowds of predominantly white people in the UK everyday, so they particular movement was hardly an exception to the rule. I mean I'm not stupid, I know exactly what Snow was trying to do and either offer his political opinion without explicitly stating it or try and push a narrative about the demographic of Leave voters. Either way it isn't the time or place on a PSB news programme to do that sort of thing. An outfit like GB News can get away with it because you know what you're getting and it's clearly targeting a particular audience. It's also fairly out the way on the EPG. However, a PSB, with the high EPG placings etc. and all that brings, should be playing a far straighter bat. Shameful.Well that’s a one off You see, this is the problem with your idea of neutrality. It basically means that news oganisations shouldn't report facts if those facts could be interpreted as some form of bias. They can't make observations about things because those observations may indicate a politicalm bias that actually doesn't exist in that report. I believe news organisations, should always report the actual facts of a story, no matter what. Leave voters were predominantly white, and predominantly rural. Those were facts in the brexit campaign, and the fact that Channel 4 News actually said that openly, didn't make them biased. Right wing "news" channels, be it GB News, Talk TV, Sky News Australia, Fox News or any of the others, tend to focus on stories that will put their agenda in a good light. That's the key difference. As do left-leaning news channels like CNN, MSNBC, and Channel 4 News. Their agenda is also largely driven by showing what they disagree with in a bad light. Jon Snow's despicable comment was a reflection on the fact that he thinks racism was a prime motivating factor for Brexit voters. Coming from the North East, I know many Brexit voters and, anecdotal as it is, they seemed to be guided by the belief that the EU is undemocratic, it's too expensive and that immigration should be controlled. This, IMO, is not racism at work. Look at Emily Maitlis's rhetoric on Newsnight for that speech that got her into trouble (but I can't remember what it was about anymore). While what she said was couched in fact, the words she used made the rhetoric biased. That said, I like both BBC and C4 News and consume them regularly. I also consume news from many other different sources with their own biases and try my best to come up with what I think is really happening from those reports. It's the best any of us can do really. RE: GB News - London Lite - 12-05-2022 Channel 4 News is in no way comparable to CNN US or MSNBC which unlike UK news programmes aren't bound by due impartiality. Bar that single Jon Snow incident, there isn't anything that makes me think it's biased. If people think that dealing with social justice issues or the government is 'left wing' or "woke" than they need to evaluate what their idea of impartiality is. GB News is designed to be an opinionated channel that targets a section of the population that agrees with their viewpoint, Channel 4 News is an impartial news programme that like Newsnight delves deeper into the news with broader analysis. One presenter's personal opinion that might creep out from time to time doesn't make C4 News or Newsnight into a television version of the Morning Star. They can't make observations about things because those observations may indicate a politicalm bias that actually doesn't exist in that report. I'm sorry, but this is just another example of "both sides are equally bad" argument that keeps cropping up, and is factually wrong every time it comes up. CNN & MSNBC do not routinely make up or twist news stories for their purposes. Rather, they tell the stories that are going to matter to their audience. If they make a mistake, they usually apologise for it. Fox News, OAN, Newsmax, GB News, Sky News Australia and others in the right wing "news" category, will routinely twist a story or even just make stuff up, and when they are proved wrong, they rarely apologise and mostly double down. They only apologise when forced to by legal action or the threat of it, such as when OAN had to recently apologise for a story they ran about so called "widespread election fraud" in Georgia, fraud that actually didn't exist. This is why the "both sides are equally bad" argument is fubndamentally and factually wrong. Coming from the North East, I know many Brexit voters and, anecdotal as it is, they seemed to be guided by the belief that the EU is undemocratic, it's too expensive and that immigration should be controlled. This, IMO, is not racism at work. Except it is, both racism and its close relation xenophobia. If you noticed, the areas that primarily voted for Brexit, where overwhelmingly white with little minority presence at all. The greater a presence, that Blacks, Asians and other ethnic minorities had in an area, the less likely it was that area would vote for Brexit. So yeah, racism was at work there. You also gotta remember that every news story is filtered multiple times before it gets to us, and we then filter it ourselves as well. News stories will have passed through the filters of reporters, producers and editors, before it even gets to our filters. You have to develop a process of what I call unfiltering, where you strip away the filters and just look for the hard facts. It can take a while but it's worth doing. Did he say that? If he was correct that the crowd was disproportionately white (apparently the footage does back him up on this point), I don't see why that is equivalent to calling them racist. It suggests a divide along racial lines over Brexit, but that doesn't automatically mean it's down to racism, or that Jon Snow was implying as much. I'm sure you can find all kinds of opinions that divide strongly along such lines (and, simultaneously, others) with no implication of racism at all. I think this is more a case of a context-deificient comment inciting inference, rather than making implication. RE: GB News - telebox2001 - 13-05-2022 It still wasn't Snow's job to say "I've never seen so many white people" - a. Because I bet he has in such a long and rich career and b. If he'd said "I've never seen so many black people" - let's say at a BLM march or a Windrush protest or something similar - the conversation would be completely different. It is exactly a reporter’s job to report what they’re seeing. Jon Snow was a reporter, long before he was a newscaster. Just because you didn’t like it, doesn’t mean he was wrong to say it. This argument falls flat on its face when you realise that the vast majority of Europeans are actually white. RE: GB News - Rob - 13-05-2022 Erm... thank you everyone. Let's cut the politics chat and get back to television presentation please... RE: GB News - CantGetIn - 13-05-2022 There appears to be some new promos and a financial section with the stock market. RE: GB News - derek500j - 14-05-2022 Interesting take by Guido:- Am looking at the BARBs for yesterday and am beginning to think that the launch of TalkTV has somehow boosted rival GB News, which is regularly coming second only to BBC News channel in many slots pushing Sky News into third place and TalkTV into fourth. https://twitter.com/MediaGuido/status/1525483936444473346?t=OnEP54x8fxkeMBBjJRgi1Q&s=19 I suppose the fact that left leaning commentators have stopped revelling in GB News' once poor ratings and the likes of Guido are keeping us updated, is testament to the channel's improving figures. Sad that BARB have stopped giving us poor mortals access to individual channel Top 15s. I think the 'left' leaning supporters have realised that it and Talk TV have low audiences that aren't going to change the culture of society overnight. When you have a Government that is sending refugees to Rwanda, you can't get any more far-right than that which rather dilutes the aims of those two channels. RE: GB News - MFTJA - 14-05-2022 GB News have uploaded clean copies of all their themes onto YouTube. Very nice, would be great if the BBC would do the same. https://up.metropol247.co.uk/MFTJA/D2963D10-3D93-48AD-87D0-797E16C283E8.png |
