BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Moz - 20-10-2021
Ok, so my view in summary is that while this all looks quite nice, it’s hardly amazing.
It all seems to hinge on one idea, the stretching blocks at the top, and very little else. While they work really well, and link the various channels and services together perfectly, the lack of anything else is a shame.
It’s all a bit simple.
Perhaps the new BBC idents will help, and when they start using the icons as well, but for now it’s all a bit meh.
If they wanted something that goes under the Daily Mail’s “BBC Waste Millions On NEW Logo” radar, then top job!

Yeah I think after seeing it all I agree! I fear that this won’t be enough to actually fulfil the brief of ‘modernising then BBC’. It all feels a little too late and whilst other companies are probably already working on the next big thing the BBC have only just brought themselves into the current times.
I mean don’t get me wrong, I really like the motion and the style they’re going for. It’s very current and on trend but I don’t think a bit of motion here and there will fix a young persons perception of the BBC.

I’ve kept my mind open until (soft) launch day but now I’ve seen the junctions I can say that I have mixed feelings! I’m totally behind the goal and spirit of Project Chameleon but I think some of the execution is not ideal. I am also worried that this new presentation will look dated before long.
I think the more dynamic trailers and animations have really brought a breath of fresh air and with a bit of refining it could be very good indeed. I think it’s just takes a bit of adjusting for us as well!
The new logo has grown on me and although originally I was completely against the change I can now appreciate why it has been done. But those letters are just too small in proportion to the size of the blocks. What happens for me when both the new and old logo are onscreen at the same time is that the old logo (in its timeless & professional glory) just shows up the new one as a poor imitation.
I like the direction this is going in, though, I just think some of the creative choices are questionable, in my opinion.
I look forward to seeing how things progress as time goes on!

A few interesting items from the junction on BBC One Wales after Wales Today.
Firstly the first Sport trail I've seen - with a weird device at the bottom giving the details of the match and which channel it's on (with an incredibly small WALES under the TWO!)...

Then this circular lens effect I've seen only a couple of times today...

Finally it appears there are several ways the blocks can appear (slowed down to start)...

All of these are nice elements which it'd be nice to see more of. Perhaps I was wrong about it being just the one idea.

I've gone the other way surprisingly. Didn't like the new logo at all when I first saw it on BBC Select but now when you see the old logo the blocks seem too closely spaced and the text too big, especially the C. The only thing I would have tweaked on the new logo would have been to slightly thicken the ends on the C which seems a little weak compared to the B's.
It certainly is jarring when you keep seeing both though. You just start getting used to the new one them bam the old one appears.

That's the first time I've seen the blocks on the screen at the same time as the iPlayer text too.
The circle device will clearly be part of the idents - seems like it needs to be slightly bigger, or smaller, to fit between the logo text IMO, but it'll be interesting to see in it's natural habitat. It's so subtle it's hardly noticeable anyway.

Is that an image of The Severn Bridge in that crystal bubble globe effect thingy? If so, surely we have just an inadvertent glimpse as to what style the idents will be. A bit like BBC Four but within a circle! I daresay it actually wouldn't take too long to film idents for the nations in that style - even as a temporary measure, there must be stock film they can use of Scottish. Welsh and northern Irish landmarks.

I was really unimpressed when I saw the videos online. I didn’t get to watch actual TV until this evening and it does look rather nice on a large screen. I think the split on the idents works ok although I’d prefer if the regional names were present on BBC 1 and we’re bigger than the current size of the nations names. Hopefully the regional names will appear when the idents change.
