Some of you may have noticed the rosette next to your username - if you have one, that means you are a founder member of the site!

The criteria for this badge is you must have joined the site within the first 6 months of the forum's launch, and have made at least 15 posts.

Verified users that meet this criteria are in this group, but will keep their blue verified status.

NOTE - the cut-off point to qualify to be a founder member will be 5.30am on the 29th September. Also, some members have slipped through the net and not been verified. If this is you, don't panic, I'll be working to get your badge added as soon as possible.

Is this totally fair? I've been a member of the site since day 1 and I've posted when I've had something to say, but otherwise I tend to stay quiet. I really don't feel I have to post if other people have already said what I was going to say and I feel it would be silly just add to my post quote by going "me too". Especially as there are other members of this forum who are experts in the trade, where as I'm a jack of all trades, but master of none!

Quality over quantity. And of course some of us have been in this community for the best part of the last 20 years after all.

And also: Stuff sucks.

If you feel you have something to say then go for it. Nobody will shout at you for saying "me too", providing its more substantial than that in your post. Speak now or forever hold your peace.

I think there is a difference though between posts like that, which quite rightly should be discouraged, to people adding what is now a commonly used phrase to the end of a post.

Things need to be allowed to flow naturally when appropriate - that post would not have been improved at all by technically sticking to the rules and typing in full "laughing out loudly". The moderation post afterwards was far more of an unnecessary intrusion than an innocent "LOL".

As others have said emojis are supplied and available to use which basically do the same thing, so facilitating one and banning the other in all circumstances seems contradictory.

Pardon me but if you feel you have to write "laughing out loud" in response to a forum post because you can't wrote "lol", then that by its nature should tell anybody its a ridiculous thing to be writing in the first place. The only place "lol" occurs naturally is on text messages, social media and Whatsapp, it almost always never crops up in a real life conversation.

And neither does Oneness.

I think you'll find so much "text speech" predates social media, WhatsApp and indeed text messaging and have their origins in bulletin boards, chatrooms and indeed forums. LOL dates back at least to a 1989 newsletter.

The rule about text speak has been there from the start. I put it in to try to encourage people to post more meaningfully and not just "lol".

I'm happy to review the rule and amend it to say that text speak is "discouraged" rather than "not allowed".

There are more creative ways of saying "I find that funny" than typing "lol". Lol would have been a useful phrase back in the days when texting was capped to 160 characters (or more if you wanted to pay for a second text) and there were no emojis to convey meaning. But that was 25 years ago. In 2021 we have all the bandwidth we want/need, texts are cheaper, we can send pictures of the cat to Uncle Fred in Outer Mongolia for the price of sod all... So surely somebody can come up with a better way of saying "that's funny" with more than three characters in it.

TL;DR - its sloppy, its lazy and it has no place on a discussion forum. Compare "OMFG TV Live Forum ROX0RZ TEH Big One 111!" vs "Oh wow, TV Forum rocks! What a great site!". Which would you prefer to read?
No hint of irony at all in finishing a post commenting on the use of the acronym "lol" with "TLDR" there I take it?

Forum Updates - JAS84 - 15-09-2021

And considering TLDR stands for Too Long Didn't Read, using that particular one seems kind of ignorant, as it implies you won't read long posts. Better to just say "In short..." instead.

Forum Updates - Neil Jones - 15-09-2021

TL;DR has a useful purpose. Also it can act as a nice little summary of what you've just written about. LOL is not a "summary" of any sort, it's just a lazy way of saying something's funny (or people keep sticking it on the end of sentences as a substitute for full stops)

Apologies for the downtime this morning. This was due to circumstances beyond my control.

Just wanted to take a moment to ask members to be patient with me if sending messages about issues they are having with the site and not getting a response. I started a new job last week which means my time on here is limited somewhat. I'll do my best to answer your questions as quickly as possible.

Cheers.

Having an offline job. How inconsiderate. Smile

*prepares to go to bed as needs to be up at 7am to shower and what not, sit in a traffic jam from about 8:20 and get to place of work for 9am*

What's your new job if we may ask?
