2022 Winter Olympics - Brekkie - 04-02-2022 Most things get a free pass due to covid at the moment but I hope the reliance on AR and projections etc. passes once we're back to ceremonies with a full cast and a full crowd. I think they've done a good job in the circumstances though and it feels a bit more positive than the Tokyo ceremony did. And if in doubt, get a few kids to sing. Will almost certainly overrun now but pretty much every opening ceremony does - perhaps especially when they promise it'll be shorter. The parade and then the speeches always go on longer than the director assumes. 2022 Winter Olympics - Medianext.MX - 04-02-2022 Brekkie post_id=66968 time= user_id=976 Wrote:Most things get a free pass due to covid at the moment but I hope the reliance on AR and projections etc. passes once we're back to ceremonies with a full cast and a full crowd. It looks very toned down compared to the masterpiece Zhang Yimou achieved in 2008, but it feels and looks much more prepared than the Tokyo ceremony. Very less depressing and much more focusing on the Together for a Shared Future language of the Games. Replicating and/or following up the ceremony from 2008 wouldn’t be very cost effective and purposeful for the current times. The lack of a sufficient number of cultural performances is also a thumbs down, but overall, is looking nice and enjoyable. BTW, the Olympic Hymn kid singers sounded very jarring, no offence intended. 2022 Winter Olympics - DamC - 04-02-2022 Brekkie post_id=66968 time= user_id=976 Wrote:Most things get a free pass due to covid at the moment but I hope the reliance on AR and projections etc. passes once we're back to ceremonies with a full cast and a full crowd. The Paris ceremony will look very different, probably with less screens and more projections on actual Paris monuments since it's going to take place along the Seine river. 2022 Winter Olympics - Medianext.MX - 04-02-2022 The big Snowflake is the cauldron! Well, the torch is being supported by the snowflake structure! Very unusual thing! A nice if a bit understated ceremony. I hope the Closing Ceremony gets better. 2022 Winter Olympics - RhysJR - 04-02-2022 Meanwhile on Dutch TV https://twitter.com/NOS/status/1489578149507698689 2022 Winter Olympics - Medianext.MX - 04-02-2022 God! I hope he’s OK and doesn’t lead to similar things with other RHBs worldwide. Running time: two hours and 20 minutes, overran for 40 minutes. 2022 Winter Olympics - Brekkie - 04-02-2022 I know they've been scaling down the cauldrons in recent years but just sticking a regular torch in it is really taking the mick. The snowflake looks spectacular but the flame itself looks awful. As nice as that was I think the ceremony missed it's big moment like Tokyo had with the sports routine. 2022 Winter Olympics - UTVLifer - 04-02-2022 Brekkie post_id=66976 time= user_id=976 Wrote:I know they've been scaling down the cauldrons in recent years but just sticking a regular torch in it is really taking the mick. I was expecting a nice big cauldron in the Bird’s Nest stadium if I’m honest, so I’m slightly disappointed The event did miss a ‘big moment’ like Tokyo’s sports routine. But otherwise it was a lovely ceremony and much more cheery and upbeat than Tokyo’s ceremony 2022 Winter Olympics - UTVLifer - 04-02-2022 Brekkie post_id=66968 time= user_id=976 Wrote:Most things get a free pass due to covid at the moment but I hope the reliance on AR and projections etc. passes once we're back to ceremonies with a full cast and a full crowd. They still did their ignorant commentary, often with heavy political undertones, and the addition of Andy Brown and Jung Tsu allowed the show to have "on-site political context". Reviewer Dominic Patten Wrote:A Chinese-hosted Winter Olympics in the Year of the Tiger should having been roaring, instead this morning’s Opening Ceremony alternated between boring and brutal. The Deadline journalist also Wrote:Likely indicating how the “enhanced,” as NBC has called it, primetime version of the opening ceremony will look with all its bells and whistles, this morning’s coverage cut early to a backstage feel-good interview with speed skater Erin Jackson once Tirico and the Stateside Guthrie hit their opening geopolitical notes. To conclude, Mr Patten Wrote:Unlike 2008, a China burly in its economic and military strength today ripped off the mask of international sports détente and gashed its teeth in a very clear selfie of its own. The politics and human rights issues can be discussed extensively in pieces around that but shouldn't be within the event themselves IMO and the BBC got the balance right by covering it in the build up rather than during the commentary. 2022 Winter Olympics - mark - 04-02-2022 I like the BBC's virtual studio. The only slight drawback from my point of view is that it doesn't really capture the location of the Games in the way their fantastic Tokyo Olympics studio did. They've obviously gone for 'winter' over 'Beijing', but I think that's fair enough and I'll happily take a snowy mountain view instead of the 2018 view of Salford. 2022 Winter Olympics - thegeek - 04-02-2022 Hatton Cross post_id=66926 time= user_id=1471 Wrote:Have to say highlight of the OBS operation for me has been the lovely OBS fleeces the camera operatives are wearing. It's not unheard of for them to end up on eBay after the games. If you're lucky you might even find an unworn one. 2022 Winter Olympics - Jon - 04-02-2022 Brekkie post_id=66986 time= user_id=976 Wrote:As important as it really is not to gloss over the issues surrounding China hosting these games I'm glad the BBC commentary focused on the event and on the athletes. Is that to take the emphasis off China being the hosts I wonder? Although I wonder if BBC Winter Olympic titles tend to be much more generic than their summer counterparts anyway? 2022 Winter Olympics - RhysJR - 04-02-2022 Brekkie post_id=66939 time= user_id=976 Wrote:I do think the BBC should have used Steve Cram for this. John and Gigi are fine but a more familiar voice would lift things. Feels a bit like a World Feed commentary. Per the 5 Live preview podcast (which in light of there being no TV preview is a decent replacement) Gigi is in Salford so presumably the commentary for the Opening Ceremony was done from Salford rather than Beijing, hence Steve Cram not being invovled. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0bm3nyy |
