Eventually, but I think this upset the unions.

I remember getting a WAC/Wacaday annual one Christmas and it had a ghost story in it. Whether it was written to be a 'true' ghost story or not I cannot remember, or maybe never thought about it as a child.

Anyway, from the depths of my memory, the story went something like there was some manager in the WAC studio the night before they started broadcasting. Near the set he looked and saw some ghostly figure (who might have been some miscreant from times long past) lifting up a trapdoor and going down the stairs inside. Then they moved the set as it was terrifying. I wish I still had that book.

The building used to be a car showroom before TV-am rocked up, so unless somebody got run over, probably safe to assume it was a fabrication.

Teddington was apparently supposed to be haunted though.

Yes - and for some reason I have a dim memory of this being the source of a dispute?

He was supposedly from an earlier period, maybe Victorian. I remember the rather vivid illustration that I found quite scary.

I don't know what the full history of the Camden Lock building was but by 1977 it looked like this (and had apparently been a car showroom since 1958):

Yes! I remember this, it was in the 1988 WAC Annual which I had at the time and, funnily enough, was looking at just a few weeks ago as it's still among a pile of my old books at my parents' house. It's exactly as you say, apparently some technician was working there the night before the first show and saw it, and was so nervous he got them to move the set to another part of the studio. And there was a suitably creepy illustration.

I was totally taken in by it at the time although I feel it's a story that may have been, at best, embellished for the book.

This is the photo of Henlys Garage, which looks more familiar to us TV Geeks

Hence the BT circuit IDs having the prefix HOG - Henley's Old Garage

Must admit I'm a fan of the old TV-am building with its 80s postmodern architecture, certainly compared to what it replaced. Seems a bit of a shame that they rebuilt the front of it a few years ago and got rid of most of that.

There are online maps that show what Hawley Crescent had as far back as 1891 (Victorian England would have been 1837-1901) and the only thing one can ascertain for certain is that Hawley Crescent existed in Victorian Times, seemingly as back to back terraced housing, in the days of outhouses and also apparently completely behind a brewery company (the entire area is now occupied by what was TV-am's studios). So any "ghosts" probably date from getting high on the fumes if the wind blows in the right direction. Smile

Of course its impossible to prove that ghosts exist and nobody can prove any building anywhere is haunted, sending the likes of Derek Acorah doesn't prove anything. But if believing makes you happy...

Does anyone know if the very last part, of the very last TV-am, where they all said goodbye, and waved, and the picture went still and turned black and white, was done live, or pre recorded? If live, how did they manage to get it turned black and white and the image to go still?

Tvam- Timeslot - Hatton Cross - 15-06-2021

There must have been a 'pause' effect button on gallery vision mixer console, then using another pre-set effect to cross fade out of colour output, and into black and white?

I've seen a pause done before on live output, so I assume it is less technical to pull off than viewers think.

Assuming it was the original 1983 installed vision mixer, I can't think of one that early that had a frame memory.?

I suspect it was a near live pre record?

Edit: However, they would have had a DVE for live use, and you could do it with that live

Today DVEs are simply incorporated within the vision mixer

Did TVAM record much of Sunday’s output such as Frost on Sunday or was it live?

I notice from 1986 the ‘Jonathon Dimbleby on Sunday’ was billed as a look back on the weeks events so could have been easily recorded.

For at least a few years it was all pre-recorded on Sundays, because there was a union agreement that they wouldn't do live shows on Sundays or Bank Holidays, in Morning Glory Mike Hollingsworth refers to it as "the most appalling union agreement for a live television channel". That went badly wrong on 1st April 1984 when their April Fool was about Albert Tatlock from Coronation Street, and Jack Howarth who played him had died overnight.
