Medianext.MX post_id=32883 time= user_id=1455 Wrote:It is nice to see something different theduytv. From what can I see, Vietnamese TV is similarly presented to Chinese TV, but it is way less refined than the latter, as they’ve upped their game and now they are in par with Western TV presentation, in part due to the involvement of foreign design companies like Flint Skallen and Trollbäck+Co, as well as world renowned sound designers like David Lowe and Stephen Arnold. Regional broadcasters have also taken cues from its American, Japanese and Korean counterparts. Can’t wait to continue explaining us a look at Vietnamese broadcasting.

Anyway, moving on to Hungary… some strange things are going on with TV presentation. Thanks to the very controversial anti-LGBT propaganda law, from last month, commercial breaks on Hungarian broadcasting are now age-rated. All commercial breaks, regardless of timeframe, media or channel, must be announced as “not suitable for people aged under 12 years”, or “not suitable for people aged under 16 years from 20:00 local time. All advertising which is LGBT-friendly cannot air until midnight, that is when ad breaks become “unsuitable for people aged under 18 years”. Most public service adverts are not entitled to this restriction.

All TV channels, including the big three networks, must adhere to the controversial restrictions, including M1, Duna, TV2 and RTL Klub. Speaking of RTL Klub, although the channel must adhere to the restrictions as condition of its licence, the channel has been a staunch critic of the law. Since July, its DOG has integrated the Pride flag as a symbol of their stance in the matter. Related to this, RTL Klub has been critical of the current government since its inception, with the otherwise tabloid news programmes offering critical reporting on the government’s agenda.

Some examples from M1, RTL Klub and TV2 (in that order):

Bonus track: how this is done on radio stations (believe it or not, even radio programmes in Hungary are age rated)

90% of VTV's graphics (from schedules to idents, promos and programming intros) are made in-house.

Can anyone told me that:
- How's the difference between UK and continental Europe presentation (minus Central/Eastern Europe)? (from past to present) (I know that UK presentation are always differ with continental one, but don't know exactly why)
- How's the difference between Western and Eastern Europe presentation?
- Why presentational style in the Western world are more and more becoming Americanized, while in Asia, it's mostly not?

International Presentation - Kunst - 07-08-2021

There's no proper continental Europe pattern.

Nordic nations, especially Norway and Sweden for instance, follow quite the "British" model , with idents and no flow.

Flanders and Netherland are kind of intermediate between the UK and Germany.

Italy, Spain, Portugal , Greece is a case of morre or less anything goes .

France is know for its Pub idents, but not many kdents or no idents, and so on

And Germany (but also Austria and CH) especially commercial channels, cuts credits, have no idebts aside from the Werbung bumpers, have a lot of "flow", and so on

Among the "mOrE oR lEsS" guys, Portugal DOES HAVE 10 sec idents between programmes, but no announcer.
Spain has a lot of "return in n" (with n a time value) bumpers.
Italy... hmm not sure what can I say

Italian DTT broadcasting will go MPEG-4 AVC on the 1st September, so broadcasters are informing viewers about likely losses on many older boxes and TV

The switch to DVB-T2 will be next year

To be fair, many continental Europe (especially western countries, but not only them) countries have gone pretty basic with their presentation, this includes Southern Europe.

Mediaset in Italy basically have never had a solid presentation for a long long time, for instance

Some stations like Discovery stations, have a more British-like presentation here in Italy (but with an Italian flavor),which I honestly like

UK presentation currently is very ordered, structured and personality led to inform the viewer, using continuity announcers. The main channels such as BBC One, BBC Two, ITV*, Channel 4*, Channel 5* have live announcers to be able to 'react' better to a dynamic reactive live schedule.

*pre-recorded in the daytime.

There's more thought on how a junction flows and emphasis on idents (and what type should be used before certain shows) are one of the tools to convey information to viewers other than promos and navigation. If something goes wrong, there's more likely to an apology rather than pretend the issue didn't happen, compared to some other countries.

We also aim to start the programme times on the hour/half hour - if a programme is over 5 minutes late and there hasn't been an attempt to let viewers aware - it would break Ofcom's rules.

Ireland also follows the UK in this presentation style, with Scandinavia closely behind.

Someone has done a video comparing presentation between ITV and TF1 in France, you'll see there's more continuity messaging on ITV and more prominent in the schedule.

Speaking of times
I so much much prefer the neat schedule based on 30 and 60 minutes when possible, to the mess that happens in much of continental Europe, aside from some Eastern European and Scandinavian countries.

Yes, it means some more internal ad breaks, but really, it's much better

International Presentation - Kunst - 08-08-2021

But yes, in general TV presentation is one of these things UK does very well, in general, even if it requires some more effort.

Italy has some creativity going on (but without the planning that goes into British TV) but since I'm also somehow familiar with French TV, I think there's a huge gap between French and British presentation.. French TV presentation tends to be very "orderly" in a quite boring way, with announcers using the same kind of pitch and so on..
It gets bland and even screams of "tacky" and "over-the-top", especially when there are things like a soft-spoken female voice saying the name of the channel on the jingle (but German TV is similar), those long introducing end boards (you can see everything in the video) etc.

think of all the banners during promos, everything seems structured.. but in reality, it isn't.

I hate the "Pub" idents concept, and the lack of "classic" idents.

And I know it's trendy to confuse "in" and "un" (especially in Paris), but it's TF1 te-e-fun", not te-e-fin"!

It looks like they are trying to mimick the Today show visually. The ticker is no longer used and the weather strap can be only seen when a normal super is on. Otherwise, a big improvement on the old graphics, which looked very tacky. The set from 2014 still looks good. Good to see they stuck with the Duran Duran title song this time, in previous rebrands, they attempted to replace the song with MGMT’s Electric Feel and Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk only to bring back their established title song due to popular demand.

Here is a montage of the new graphics…

The current set is actually from 2016, which was when the last graphics refresh occurred in February of that year. I have noticed that bits and pieces of the new graphics are a mish-mash of NBC Today's 2019 and 2021 offerings.

It's nice that the new graphics have an angled style which mimics the Seven Network Australia's current On-Air Presentation.

Overall, I like the new look! 8-)

here in Vietnam, DVB-T1 is decommisioned. Only in DVB-T2 MPEG4 only since 2019/20.

International Presentation - Rdd - 09-08-2021

Presentation in Ireland is virtually indistinguishable from the U.K. pattern - I guess the main difference being that in-vision continuity hung around a lot longer, and is still used by TG4 (or was the last time I looked, rugby aside I barely watch the channel).

On the other hand we ditched station clocks slightly (but only slightly) earlier, RTE One’s last one was 1995 and never worked properly (ditched not long after the famous “time is passing us by” incident) and there was a short lived digital one on N2 (now RTE2) in 1997 that I think barely lasted a few weeks.
