Premier League 2021-2 Season - Television - Brekkie - 27-12-2021

Wonder if the whining about the festive fixtures would be less if the Amazon games started Wednesday rather than tomorrow. Guessing with Tuesday technically being the Boxing Day Bank Holiday is the justification- from a broadcasting point of view still a Bank Holiday fixture list, rather than becoming a midweek fixture list.

I think it would be a lot less. Playing three days apart is quite common (particularly for the teams in Europe.)but this is the only time in the season (some) teams have to play just two days later.

I can see even next season being no team plays no earlier than three days later.

That wouldn't help, and it would be far more inconvenient for fans because Wednesday is a normal working day, unlike Tuesday. OK, you can say hardly anyone is working, but rather more people are than Tuesday, so they'd all have to be evening kick-offs - and you don't want to be sending fans halfway across the country for evening kick-offs in the days between Christmas and New Year.

So from the fans' perspective, Tuesday is a far better option. And I say this with minimal experience of being a professional sportsman, but I would suspect a longer break in the summer would be of more value than another 24 hours in December.

But it’s clear that every year this issue will get even more coverage and is it worth it for the broadcasters when it’s them getting the blame for the schedule.

It normally takes 72 hours according to most of the mangers to fully recover from the previous game.

Next year the 28th is not a bank holiday so the matches would have to be evenings anyway so what’s the harm in them all being 29th or 30th if they don’t want matches in the day time of those days. If more broadcasting slots are needed 5.45/6pm kickoff’s would be suitable as those happen on normal working days for Champions and Europa League matches.

I honestly will be surprised if they are ever matches on the 28th again except if those teams haven’t played since before Christmas.

It's worth saying that most managers are simply answering questions they're asked in press conferences and because there is so much football media these days, these comments then get repeated and turned into endless articles to fill space. I doubt any of these managers are genuinely so bothered about it that they'd do anything about it. This issue comes up every season and it becomes a bit of a story for a few days - conveniently when not much else is happening for the papers to write about - and then it's forgotten about.

If previous seasons are anything to go by, next season there won't be any matches between Boxing Day and New Year's Eve. And teatime kick-offs on working days are terrible for match-going fans, and bloody awful for broadcasters.

The other thing is that if the Premier League could choose, they would probably want 38 weekend rounds, as that would certainly be the most convenient for broadcasters. But obviously there's no space for that, so it is often a case of squeezing them in where possible.

I am not sure if managers putting out mentions of players striking is just filling interview space. There does seem to be genuine feeling that playing 48 hours later should be stopped for good.

It is the same reason why many players will boycott a biannual World cup if FIFA do push it through.

Premier League 2021-2 Season - Television - RR - 28-12-2021

I'd also be sceptical on many of the comments on the World Cup - there is a fight over commercial rights. UEFA, dead against a two year world cup, is simultaneously looking at inviting South American countries to a joint expanded Nations League.

Playing 48 hours later - or with only 1 clear day between fixtures - isn't tolerated any other time during the season, so it shouldn't be tolerated during Christmas. And don't come out with the "they've all got big squads, they can cope" argument.

Premier League 2021-2 Season - Television - Brekkie - 28-12-2021

It used to happen more often when Bank Holiday Monday fixtures were more common, and indeed still does in the lower leagues with smaller squads and less elite sports people.

I certainly see Steve's argument that if it was presented to players as playing an extra game this week or having one less week off in the summer most would prefer to play now, and while it is probably covid which has undoubtedly heightened the argument this year, along with how the bank holiday has fallen, if the compromise in future years is to continue to have three matches but ensure a three day gap then that's probably better than moving the middle fixture list completely, which in reality would likely end up midweek later in the season anyhow so even less convenient.

Obviously next year the World Cup messes things up anyway but presumably when Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday there isnt usually a fixture list then. Common sense would be for the games to be scheduled on the 26th/27th, 29th/30th and 1st/2nd, trying to keep the same teams to the second day of the schedule. The following year the argument will likely be over New Years Day games (on the Monday), which will follow presumably a full fixture list on the Saturday. Ultimately whilst this year there might be an argument to scrap the midweek fixtures between the two bank holidays that argument isn't as strong when the bank holidays fall midweek and you'd be scrapping a weekend fixture list instead.

They basically need to suck it up - they're paid enough after all. Also worth noting that when clubs arrange their lucrative pre-seasons tour matches are often within 48 hours of each other.

Graham Little presenting Southampton v Spurs on Premier Sports 1 now, he’s normally more associated with their URC coverage but that’s fallen even more heavily victim to Covid than the Premier League has.

AZPV - Every Game, Every Goal recognising the limited number of games available are taking a reasonable attitude and are concentrating on the #SOUTOT fixture moving across to the #WATWHU and #CRYNOR matches when required, rather than trying to fill airtime.

I don’t think in 2023 we will see teams playing on the 30th and then NYD. Previously it was often the smaller squads more annoyed than the larger squads but this year it’s both types. Together that’s enough to have an influence. How much they being paid doesn’t really matter if the problem is physical fitness and the quality of the matches.

Everton - Newcastle gone…

Becoming more of 'problem' now rather than an 'inconvenience' 20 Matches and counting need to be rearranged. Not an easy task especially as some teams are more affected than others. The only side unaffected at present is Man City.

Team .... Number of Fixtures outstanding.

Crystal Palace 1
Newcastle 1
Norwich 1
Southampton 1
West Ham 1
Aston Villa 2
Brentford 2
Chelsea 2
Leeds 2
Leicester 2
Liverpool 2
Man Utd 2
Wolves 2
Arsenal 3
Brighton 3
Everton 3

Seems an extra 2 weeks on the end of the season would give some breathing room to mop up outstanding fixtures.

At the moment the final game in the league is May 22 - England play in the Nations Cup 4th June (the first set of games that round being 2nd June). There isn't really any further room at the end of the season.
